“Jawoll, Jaaaa! Rums rums rums”

[Resident Advisor Podcast / Interview]

“Rumplestiltskin

Originally hailing from New Zealand but raised in Australia, Emerson Todd has enjoyed tremendous success on both sides of the Tasman. He first got the bug to collect music very early in life as his mother owned several independent record stores. This gave him access to pretty much anything and everything he ever wanted to hear.

As fate would have it, Emerson returned to New Zealand in 1996 to visit family and friends. This visit ended up lasting for seven years and, before long, he had established himself as one of the country’s top DJs, balancing national tours with monthly gigs back in Australia.

In 1998 he met Christiaan Ercolano and formed the act House of Downtown, which quickly gathered an impressive following with the success of their weekly radio show and their debut single ‘Up For the One’, which was supported by the likes of Derrick May.

The pair were soon snapped up by Universal Music who offered them their own label to run and release on. Subsequently, they produced two full-length albums. During this time, they also produced the complete movie score for UK Company Film Four (of ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’) for the movie ‘Stickmen’.

In 2003, Emerson relocated to Australia to concentrate on production and audio engineering, producing for other artists and leaving his own music aside for a couple of years. Absorbing all the experience he could to perfectionate his skills as an engineer and producer, he soon found himself at the forefront of audio engineering in Australia, working with such bands as The Presets, The Sleepy Jackson, Teenager and Pnau.

Having now worked for both major and independent labels locally and internationally, under aliases, in groups, and produceing and engineering for many world-class acts, Emerson has finally stepped out from behind the desk and now dedicated himself to refining his own sound.

From his early productions on Darren Emerson’s imprint Underwater, to signing on Claude VonStroke’s label Dirtybird, and now with a string of high profile releases to follow (such as a collaboration with Tim Green for Cocoon Recordings, and a remix of a Layo & Bushwacka track to be released soon) – it is clear Emerson Todd is on the right path to making his quirky and fun electronic dance music heard worldwide!

As he is moving to London in June, you can expect to hear him play all over Europe in summer. Be sure not to miss his DJ-set @ Tresor Club in Berlin on July 1st.

Welcome, Android Cartel!

[web]

[myspace]

“Robotic Redemption…”

Android Cartel is a production team and DJ duo comprised of Reagan Denius and Chris Mohn based in Los Angeles, California. Their style combines the sounds of tech house, deep house, techno, minimal and other styles of 4×4 electronic dance music to create an abstract inventive sound that takes its listeners to other galaxies. As Chris and Reagan put it themselves, when they produce music and play out, they’d like you to sit in on their android invasions across the universe, spreading the positive messages of life.

In short time since their inception in October 2007, their music is being played and supported by the likes of Steve Lawler, Ben Watt, Radio Slave, Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox, Luciano, John Digweed, Chris Fortier, Hernan Cattaneo and many more.

At the end of 2008, an E.P. by Android Cartel was signed to Steve Lawler’s label VIVa MUSIC - their first big release “Cyber Psychosis” was released in early 2009. As well as the VIVa release, the Androids had two releases on Chris Fortier’s label Fade Records, and will be seeing a remix of one of Fortier’s songs on Australian label EQ Recordings, which named them as part of their “who’s who” list of underground electronic dance music producers. Both Fade Records releases have charted in the top 10 of the Balance Record Pool for underground electronic dance music.

In the last year the Androids have also built up a tight following in the Los Angeles area and have DJed at many shows in the local scene, quickly becoming local matadors in Southern California. In Los Angeles, they headlined the popular Monday Social twice last year, opened up for John Tejada at the beginning of 2009, and so far played many shows at the King King venue. The Androids have also created a buzz in the San Diego scene, playing at Giant’s SPIN night club, as well as throwing many of their own parties in conjunction with Tekfunk.

Android Cartel also host a monthly internet radio show called “Expressions in Sound” on Proton Radio, airing every third Wednesday of the month from 3PM - 5PM PST (6PM - 8PM EST). The show has hosted guests such as Luca Bacchetti, Robert Babicz, Livio & Roby, Chris Fortier, Erphun, an many others.

BKI thanks the Androids for their BKI-12 DJ mix and their positive energy and hopes to welcome them on the decks in Berlin soon!

Benvenuto, Daniele Papini!

[myspace]

“Church Of Nonsense

Daniele Papini has a passion for music and this is evident when you first meet him. This man lives and breathes music so much that his home is just one big studio, where he tweaks his machines (”I just need a studio with a bed in the corner!”).
He started Djing during his early 20ʼs and quickly became resident in several clubs in Florence in the late 90ʼs. Soon after that, he started playing as a guest DJ slots in many clubs around Europe.

Daniele’s passion for DJing and music soon turned into a want to produce and after a chance meeting with Alen Sforzina in Croatia founded the GraFit Project . Their first collaborations were released on Italian labels like Urban Mantra and German labels such as Stadtwald and Toneman. In 2004 Daniele worked hard in the Urban Mantra studio - during this period, flying through the “backyards of techno music”, Daniele met the Italian DJ & producer Riccardo Ferri, who in turn introduced him to the Alchemy Records family.

In 2006 Mauro Picotto asked Daniele to join the Meganite crew as a DJ. Daniele agreed and his DJ career once again took off - he was performing all over the world again, touring with Meganite, which over the last 5 years has become a well respected brand, not only at its home in Ibiza but worldwide.

For some time, Daniele travelled back and forth between Berlin and Florence, eventually moving to Berlin and fitting out his studio. Finally, Daniele’s hard work in the studio paid off when he released one of the biggest hits of 2008, “Church of Nonsense”. Released in May 2008, just before the summer, the popularity of this monster of a track grew and grew, and it rapidly became an all-time techno anthem. “Church of Nonsense” received great feedback - not only from almost every top DJ but also from people following entirely different musical “genres” - and remained at the peak of the Beatport techno charts and the DJ Mag downloads charts.

Currently, Daniele Papini is working on several solo projects and remixes, collaborating with other artists from electronic music to indie music and working on a Live set. If you are in Berlin, check out his MySpace for dates and come to see him play at the Club der Visionäre, where he regularly brings you extensive DJ sets lasting up to 8 hours. The Daniele Papini DJset @ this month’s BKI-12 was recorded there in mid March.

Grazie per la musica!

- 24. April 2009 -

The PRIVAT crew invited us over to Milan-Italy for a true special:

Berlin Mitte Institut vs. Berlin Kreuzberg Institut

- Showcase featuring -

Robosonic (Diskomafia, Berlin Kreuzberg Institut)
Kandel (Autist, Diskomafia, Berlin Mitte Institut)
Fresh Meat (Berlin Mitte Institut, Delikat)
warmup: Radio Marelli (Gasoline Rec, Milan)

Are you a party promoter / club owner and interested in such a special too?
Contact us!

The event took place in a stripped-down industrial location on the outskirts of the city.  We had a great time - even when the party was busted around 2am by the police due to some legal shiznitt  (and because the place was overcrowded).

Listen to & Download the full live recording << HERE >> (2h / MP3 / 192kbps)

The file includes room mike recordings and various interviews on the concept of Privat Party and Techno Music in Milan.

Friday 24 april:

6:00: Sacha Robotti [½ of Robosonic] gets up, brushes teeth, gets dressed, packs stuff, rushes down to the cab where Cord Henning Labuhn [½ of Robosonic] is already sitting with tired eyes and a smile.

6:30: Friendly turkish cab driver stops at the bakery so the Berlin Kreuzberg Institut can get some Croissants & Börek (which will stay in the bag til Sunday, half-eaten)

7:45: Berlin Kreuzberg Institut meets Berlin Mitte Institut (Matthias Kandel aka Kandel & Jan Kühn aka Fresh Meat) at Schönefeld airport. Excitement in the air. Ryanair staff is surprisingly friendly. On check-in, Kandel & Fresh Meat have to switch on their laptops to prove they didn’t turn their machines into bombs.

8:45: “Goode morninge laydiese anda gentellemen thissise youre captaine speakinge”. Lovely airplane speakers. No turbulences. The alps look beautiful!

10:15: Touchdown in Milano / Bergamo, out of there pretty fast as we only have handluggage. Meeting our driver Conni, supernice guy, 40minute ride into the city.

11:00: Drop off at Fausto’s (organizer of Privat Party with Oliver) in Milan centre. Fausto’s place is small and cosy and you have to access through a midget door into a courtyard: BMI & BKI’s home for 2 days.

11:30: Meeting Fausto & Oliver accross the street in a café. Cappuccino.

12:15: Lasagna, Pasta with Salmon, Chinotto, Cappuccino at the place where Conni’s girlfriend works. Mmmmh..

13:00: Pier from Milan-based DJ duo Radio Marelli takes BMI & BKI to the Radio Popolare studios on the outskirts of Milan. Radio Popolare is a left-wing FM station broadcasting in the whole of Italy. We got 15 minutes on air and are very late.

13:30: BMI & BKI get interviewed by a fast-speaking sympathetic Italian. The radio hosts wants us to talk about the BMI & BKI concepts, the “East and the West thing”, about partying in Berlin and why we love what we do. The language barrier makes Robotti talk most of the time in his (semi-)fluid Italian. The Radio Popolare hosts play a 90s-sounding breakbeat song and falsely announce it as a “BMI track” - bloindin!

14:00: Cappuccino. Ride back to town centre.

15:00: Facing the first technical problems, as the guy who was supposed to get the internet running at the “Spazio Maderna” party location [so we could stream the whole evening live on web tv Shouted FM] never showed up. Fausto found a USB mobile phone card internet connection, which at least permitted us to stream Live Audio via a Nokia. We all hoped that it would work when 1500 Italians are dancing at the location and sending SMS.

16:00: Cord & Kandel chillout at Fausto’s place, while Robotti & Fresh Meat drive off to the location to soundcheck.

17:00: “Spazio Maderna” party location is a big industrial hall in an industrial area with a massive soundsystem. Barely any party lighting, no visuals, just plain concrete, metal and later on the crowd. Rave 1.0. Sound is super loud and bassy. Fresh Meat hooks up his mike and gets the Nokia stream running, it all seems to work. Back to Fausto’s. Italians drive well, but fast! In his next life, Conni will be a rally driver.

18:00: Supermarket to get everything a DJ needs to survive a night of hard work. Siesta time for BMI & BKI at Fausto’s. Some of us try to sleep while others show off their Traktor system, firing up the obvious “Vinyl vs. CD vs. Digital-DJ” talk.

20:00: Shower, get dressed, pack stuff, smoke a cigarette. Cappuccino. Waiting for Conni - who we’re supposed to meet at 21:15 for dinner but who is instead spending quality time at the police station to claim his car papers were stolen.

21:30: Cab to “Don Gio”, nr.1 pasta place in Milan. Salty bruschettas with anchovies, red wine, pasta with chicken, sausage, tomato sauce. Of course: strong Espressos as desert. Home sweet home!

23:30: “Spazio Maderna”. Radio Marelli warms up, place fills up. Free entry - just the drinks cost a little more. Fresh Meat starts interviewing people and feels in his element like a fish in the water.

00:30: Kandel & Fresh Meat tag, place is packed by now, people have their first drink.

01:00: Robosonic take over, place is rather packed by now, slowly turning up the volume.

01:30: Crowd starts to bounce, suddenly Fausto runs up telling us the police is at the door threatening to close the place as too many people are inside (1500) and too many people are standing outside trying to get in (2500).

01:45: Slowly turning down the volume. 1500 Italians sing football-type songs and “turn the volume up” and are coming up to the DJ booth to ask what the hell’s wrong. Repeated “scusa ma la polizia ci ha detto di spegnere la musica” about 100 times.

02:00: Lights on, music out. Damn! Everybody leaves the place, the bouncers look solid. Packing our stuff, smoking a cigarette, saying “sorry sorry” to the remaining crowd. Fausto & Oliver say “sorry sorry” to us (blaming it on the owner of the location who apparently didn’t talk to the polizia before the party). They invite us to do this party again in a safe location in the upcoming months. Stay tuned!

03:30: Amnesia club. Jeff Mills is playing extremely hard techno!

Welcome, Luke Solomon!

“House music all night long…”

Luke Solomon has had a successful career spanning almost 17 years. He has worked his way up through the ranks gaining recognition from all different fields of electronica and dance. Starting in the early 90’s he went from record shop attended to securing a job at Freetown Records working with artists such as Felix the Housecat, Masters at Work, Jamie Principle and Marshall Jefferson. He then went on to work with Roger Sanchez at Narcotic in the mid 90’s.

This led to his long lasting friendship and partnership with Derrick Carter and the setting up of their legendary label, Classic. Through all of this Luke has retained a successful production career with partner Justin Harris, as Freaks, and as a recently established solo artist, recording for Radioslave’s Rekids Label amongst others.

Back in 1994 Luke began working in various studios alongside dance music veterans Rob Mello and Ty Holden.  Learning from the ground up he initially sat in on sessions and threw ideas around whilst his peers did all the hard work. Over the first few years Luke worked in different studios on different systems using a whole range of outboard and analogue equipment. During this time he remixed Ashley Beedle’s Black Sunshine Orchestra and recorded for the seminal deep house label Prescription Underground.

15 years later and Luke has around 150 original productions under his built which include four Freaks albums and two solo albums plus around 200 remixes of music ranging from Mood to Swing, Matthew Herbert to  Kasabian, the Archie Bronson Outfit and a little Duran Duran thrown in along the way.

This brings us to present day.  Luke has been working on his third solo album and a whole stack of new Freaks material after riding on the wave of a top 10 hit with “The Creeps” (International DJ Gigolo). In turn this has opened new doors for Luke, having just finished co - producing Damian Lazarus’s solo album with Penguin Cafe Orchestra’s Arthur Jeffes, cementing Luke’s ambition to become a full time producer.

Luke has continued to work on various platforms using his years of experience as A & R coupled with his technical studio knowledge to allow him to put his stamp on other peoples music. We at BKI are honoured to have Luke spin some tunes for us!

“The Deacon

There’s a rumble in the underground - coming out, swinging like a charging bear to bring the noise. It’s the sound of sleep deprivation, three days on the rack, the buzzing in your ear and the twisted, wonky triple vision as you fight your way to the bar once again.

Born of a love all things weird, wired and wonderful, Idiotproof is the three headed, freakshow baby, born of many long nights of chemical abandonment. A lover of heavy beats, twisting basslines and mutilated soft toys, this freak of nature will jack you on the dancefloor as well as, possibly, bite your leg off.

Idiotproof is the combined force of three notorious international playboys - one of them being Sir Jamie Anderson, that’s for sure. Idiotproof have reached into the deepest heart of rave and have emerged from the black strobe light with a chrome plated, low slung, bass driven conception of house music for the twenty-first century. Genre defining singles for Jesse Rose’s Made to Play label have delivered shockwaves throughout the globe and remixes for Armand Van Helden, X-Press 2, Rolloʼs (Faithless) new All Thieves project, Sam Sparro and the Audio Bullys have resulted in dance floor annihilation for guns big and small.

You have been warned. Thank you.

Welcome, Basti Grub!

[myspace]

Höhenregler vs. Geregelt

Born in March 1983,  Sebastian Grub aka Basti Grub lived in a quiet village near Frankfurt. He had a  sheltered upbringing with his parents and grandparents. Already in his early childhood he knew that he was different than other kids: while his mates were playing in the sandpit, Basti put on headphones, turned knobs & pushed buttons on his dad’s stereo. His dad was into reggae music, which influenced lil’ Basti.

At the age of 14 he dreamed to own a Roland MC 303. As his lovely family was granting him nearly every wish, he got the 303 and started spending day and night to try and convert his thoughts into sounds.

At the age of 15 Basti started having fun on techno parties in the scene of Frankfurt and Kassel. In clubs like Omen, Stammheim, MTW and later also the Robert Johnson Basti got heaps of inspiration. He bought his first turntables and started spinning and spinning…

…In 2005 Basti founded “Electronic Headache / Massive Frequenzen” with his friend Billy and started some parties in the Wetterau area. Both party series became hugely popular, filling clubs like studio 54 or Club Fifty. As he couldn’t get enough of music, Basti started produceing his own tracks.

His friend, idol and teacher Brian Sanhaji helped Basti to get deep into the production. He started experimenting and found his own mixture of groovy, minimal techno and african sounds, which make his music unique and unmistakable.

In 2007 Basti founded his own label Höhenregler and a short time later released his first vinyl (höhe 01), which he was distributing by himself. The “Höhenregler Label Night” parties he threw at club Fifty became more and more popular, featuring acts like Pierre, Marky, Bine, Brian Sanhaji and others.

With his second release (höhe 02) Basti realised that it is too hard to distribute everything by himself - so he got a distribution deal with Discomania.

Meanwhile he has some releases on his own labels but also on others, like Bar 25, Merkesdir, International Freakshow, Suona. Basti doesn’t think being a producer and a DJ is a daily “job”, he’s rather feeling it as a way of life, an attitude which he wishes to share with others. This is how he’d like to spread his sound out into the world…

The tracks you are hearing in this month’s BKI show are all made & performed by Basti Grub, released on his own labels. If you get the chance, go and see Basti LIVE!

Check out Basti Grub’s debut album “Das Dschungel Orchester” on Höhenregler / Geregelt at the end of March!

“Spread the Groove”

The friendly boys from Hamburg, Frederic Berger and Patrick Buck, got to know each other in the context of their respective projects Nudisco and Kaiser Souzai for the label Hi Freaks in Patrick’s studio. After finding tons of things they have in common, the boys couldn’t wait to work with each other.

Frederic had already celebrated several successes as part of Nudisco, and this also held true for Patrick as a member of the Kaiser Souzai crew. As they connected, it wasn’t long before their new project emerged - Kaiserdisco. Their first production was a remix for Phunklarique on Yellow Tail. Originally produced just for fun, it turned into a hit just three days after its release, shooting to No. 2 on the Beatport Minimal charts and remaining there for over a month…

…which of course attracted the attention of others. Remix inquiries followed, and Kaiserdisco easily lost their baby teeth in 2008 after only 6 months together: re-interpretations of Extrawelt, Ji-Fi and Access Denied, all of them in the charts for weeks, established their reputations as excellent remixers.
Soon after, the first Kaiserdisco solo single saw the light on Micro.fon.
Furthermore, a booking deal withBerlin’s Kiddaz.fm gang, supervised by DJ Emerson and Holgi Star, will allow Frederic and Patrick to rock some of the finest Techno Clubs.

2009 will see more of Kaiserdisco: in February, the Cologne-based label MBF released their EP “Pipe!”, followed by remixes for Holgi Star, Christian Fischer and many more.
Also, follow-up releases on MBF and on Micro.fon are currently being produced…!

The Kaiserdisco set featured in this month’s BKI is a live cut from the “9 Years Kiddaz.fm - Spread the Groove Tour”, recorded at Tresor Club (Berlin) on 07. February 2009.

Check out Kaiserdisco’s latest releases “Pipe!” on MBF, “Traction” on Micro.Fon,
as well as their remixes of Extrawelt & Access Denied:

Welcome, J.Phlip!

[myspace]

lets-not-forget-this-is-dance-music

J.Phlip, known to most as Jess or Jessica Rose Phillippe, was completely ruined when she discovered house music in her hometown of Champaign, IL just 2 hours south of Chicago. This location might help describe the how or why behind this unique genre bending blend that Phlip brings to the dancefloor.

Perhaps it was the proximity to Chicago that let house music make its influence, but the distance that allowed her the freedom to eventually welcome other sounds into her mix. Her sets posses this fun lets-not-forget-this-is-dance-music feeling and simultaneously keeps you guessing as to what might come next. Her collection spans house, tech house, deep house, techno, random bleeps, and special bloops. In 2005 she won ‘Beauty and the Beats’, a national DJ competition help by BPM magazine, that lead to a tour with DJ Rap, Colette, and Reid Speed. Since then she has made a name for herself as a DJ in Chicago and now as DJ / Producer in San Francisco.

On her first release for Dirtybird Records end of 2008, “J” has created a track that is both intricate and massive. A wall of devastating bass anchors Rumble Rumble’s assault, bolstered by an effervescent rhythmic net of popcorn snaps, soda cans popping open, and seductive whispers and giggles at the very edge of audibility.

Jessica has been a pivotal part of Chicago’s electronic music community for many years and has since secured a residency at San Francisco’s infamous Endup nightclub that is notoriously know for non-stop never-ending parties.

Thanks Jessica for your BKI mix!

“DUM”

Christian Martin’s love affair with electronic music began in 1995, as an early attendee at Southern California’s legendary Moontribe full moon desert parties. After absorbing late 90’s club life in New York, London, and Los Angeles, Christian settled in San Francisco in the spring of 2000. He started playing records in 2002 under the tutelage of his brother, Justin Martin, armed with a stack of Justin’s old vinyl and used Technics 1200’s from Sammy D.
In 2003, inspired by the massive desert soundsystems of old, Christian founded the Dirtybird Soundsystem. Along with co-founders Justin Martin, Worthy, and Claude VonStroke, Dirtybird’s Sunday afternoon BBQ’s have quickly become a
Golden Gate Park institution.

2006 saw the release of collaborations with Justin Martin (”The Martin Brothers EP”, Dirtybird) and Claude Vonstroke (”Peanut Butter Jelly Time EP,” Undefeated Records).

Along with Christian’s residency at Dirtybird’s monthly club nights in SF and New York, he’s been busy in the studio, polishing multiple remixes and originals: in 2008, two more collaborations, “Dum” by the Martin Brothers and “Groundhog Day” with Claude VonStroke were released on Dirtybird. Furthermore, Christian released his track “Elephant Fight” on Anabatic with Worthy & Justin Martin remixes.

2009 looks to be busier than ever for Christian as he helps shape the future of Dirtybird’s unique sound and fully focus on his DJ / producer activities.

Be sure to not miss Christian’s afternoon coffee set at the Fusion Festival 2009!

[Phonique's label LADIES AND GENTLEMEN]

“…meine Damen und Herren…”

After moving to Berlin in the mid 90’s, Michael Vater was on the go like few others in Berlin. His successful parties and club nights got much love and paved him the way to become one of the nice guys in Berlin’s nightlife. First he only organized parties, after a while he started to DJ himself:

„DJ Phonique“ was born.

Since January ‘98, Phonique continued to bring previously lesser known DJs and producers to Berlin for his club nights and parties, presenting many strong nights with DJs like Glen Gunner (Street Corner Symphony/Block 16), Lil Tony (Nu Spirit Helsinki/Guidance), Alexkid (F-Com/Ovum), Llorca (F-Com/Brique Rouge), Joakim (Tigersushi) or Ivan Smagghe (Blackstrobe/Volga Select).

In the meantime, Phonique continued to develop his „freestyle“ profile. His guests were treated to a mix from Hip-Hop via Breakbeats to Old School and Drum‘n’Bass. Just about anything was possible in between, as long as the tracks had the groove he felt right.

To his parties, Phonique invited DJs like LTJ Bukem, Richard Dorfmeister and many more. Traveling the world and playing clubs in Sao Paulo, Helsinki, Paris, London, Marseille, Vienna, Brussels, San Francisco, Prague, Tel Aviv, just to name a few destinations, Phonique never forgot his Berlin base.

Just like his residencies at Tresor and Pfefferbank (among others), where he brought his ‘Club Paris’ evening to life, with guests like Pepe Bradock, DJ Deep, Jori Hulkkonen and I:Cube.

From time to time Phonique, together with his partner Kiki, presented their QuadroPhoniquekikz’ on four turntables, eventually releasing their first ‘QuadroPhoniquekikz’ mix-CD in 2002 on Komfort Musik.

Phonique’s first two 12“ were released on Martin Landsky’s Intim Recordings, and from then on Phonique released on labels like Komfort Musik (Berlin), Seasons (USA), Brique Rouge (Paris) and Crosstown Rebels (London), but mainly on Steve Bug’s own Poker Flat and Dessous.

His first remix (for Doctorolive) was released on French label Bazoline. After remixes for Frankman (Draft/Fm), Soulcamp (Soulcamp), Le Tone (Naive), Funky Transport (Brique Rouge), Tonic Agents (Highgrade), Detroit Grand Pubahs (Poker Flat) and Erlend Oye (!K7) he even remixed Germany’s pop phenomena „Rosenstolz“.

Besides Phonique’s remixing talents and DJing with vinyl and CDs, he also started to edit tracks so they made more sense for his DJ-sets. When Jazzanova found out about this, they asked him to do some for their own use. So Phonique worked out some edits, partly with his buddy Dixon. Edits for Georg Levin and DJ Spinna and remixes for Georg Levin and Sirius Mo got released on Jazzanova’s Sonar Kollektiv label.

2004 was a successful year for Phonique. His second 12“ on Dessous „The Red Dress“ climbed on top of the official German Club Charts (DCC), „The Red Dress“ was soon being played by almost every key DJ in Europe. Besides producing four tracks with Louie Austen, he also worked on Erlend Oye’s DJ-Kicks (!K7) in technicals, mixing and consulting and played several tour dates with Erlend all across the world.

In Autumn 2004 Phonique’s debut album „Identification“ on Dessous was released, featuring collaborations with Paris The Black Fu, Erlend Oye, Alexander East, Ian Whitelaw and Dixon. With amazing international feedback, even a number one chart entry on Itunes’ dance download charts it turned out to be Phonique’s breakthrough success. Also the single „For The Time Being“ with remixes by Alexkid and Motorcity Soul received massive positive feedback, followed by a remix by Sasse (Moodmusic) and leading to a future collaboration with Rodney Hunter (G-Stone). Even for Sven Väth „Identification“ was a highlight - thus he asked Phonique for an exclusive track for „Cocoon Compilation E“.

With the closing of Tresor in 2005 Phonique lost one of his favorite residencies, where he played at the Bonito House Club once a month since his first Tresor Wednesday night gig in February ‘99… Since Berlin’s nightlife is subject to rapid change, Phonique’s residencies change alike. Currently you can hear him mainly at Weekend - F.U.N. Crew’s incredible venue with a view over all of downtown Berlin at Alexanderplatz.

Recently Phonique asserted his recognition as one of the high profile remixing artists in the dance world, when he remixed Morcheeba’s former vocalist for her solo project „Skye“ (Atlantic/ Warner). Phonique now mostly works with Alex Krüger (Dub Taylor / Korsakow / Tigerskin) for his productions/remixes, but from time to time he is cooperating with other artists or musicians like Steve Bug, David Duriez & Phil Weeks, Martin Landsky or Meitz.

In 2006 Phonique released on respected labels from the like of Four Music‘s Fine, Moodmusic, Simple Records and Tiefschwarz‘s Souvenir, next to his homebase Dessous Recordings. In January 2007, Phonique launched „Ladies & Gentlemen“ - his own special label for well selected discoid, but still underground sound of House with pop-appeal and a special touch of je-ne-sais-quoi.

Besides labelwork, playing a busy tour schedule from Tokyo to St.Petersburg and everywhere in between, Phonique has released „Good Idea“, the follow-up longplayer to „Identification“ in May 2007.

In 2008, he got voted “Best Deep House Act” by Beatport. Ladies and Gentlemen.. Phonique!

Watch out for Phonique’s upcoming release on “Dessous” [beginning of 2009]!

Welcome, Dave Shokh!

[Dave's label DIPOLTER]

“Straight from the city of Whooom”

David Koch aka Dave Shokh graces this month’s December BKI session with an exclusive and rocking live-set.

25-year old Dave Shokh from Stuttgart moved to Berlin in 2005 and since that time he’s been doing what he does best: Music. As he claims himself, his musical socialisation began at the beginning of the 1990s with dance music from the likes of Snap, Felix, 2Unlimited.

1997 Dave got his first pair of decks, soon also a computer to produce music. Since then, Dave has been highly productive: he’s been the man behind every release on Playmate Music, his most successful release on this label being the “Luna e Sole” EP.

Furthermore, he’s been produceing records for and together with Monika Kruse and Tony Rohr. Dave also produces the German House Legend DJ Karotte.

In 2005, Dave launched his own imprint Dipolter Records. The Dipolter label stands for high quality Electro and Techhouse music and supports the brightest young talents just like Dave used to be a little while ago.

At a DJ gig, he met Berlin underground matadors Holgi Star and DJ Emerson, handed them a demo, and soon released his debut album “Shokh’n'Roll” on their label Kiddaz FM in 2003.

Dave Shokh was voted Germany’s Top 10 newcomer in the biggest techno magazine Raveline; “Shokh’n'Roll” also made it into the mags’ Top 20.

In 2005, Dave’s first mix CD “Pure Shokholate” is released on Kiddaz FM, featuring tracks by Matthias Tanzmann, Zombie Nation, Gabriel Ananda and Thomas Schumacher.

So far, Dave’s productions have been played by top jocks such as Sven Väth, DJ Hell and Laurent Garnier. Whether he’s on tour in Japan, Russia, UK or in Germany, Shokh has his own DJ and production rule: There are no rules.

Dave calls his style ‘Shokh’n'Roll’, an essential mixture out of Electro, Minimal and Techhouse ingredients with heaps of Emotion, Funk and Soul. No one knows which combination of ingredients he will use this time to spice up your clubnight.

One thing is sure though: Dave Shokh will give 200% from beginning to the end to make you sweat and bounce. Whooom!

Check out Dave Shokh’s latest release “Glow” on Dipolter Records!

[official website]

“Moin Claudia!”

Claudia Marquardt aka P.toile is a Berlin-based DJ and Producer, very active and respected on the local scene, as well as to an international panorama thanks to the quality of her productions. Immersed in music, she also runs the infamous booking agency Clique Bookings in Berlin.

In 1993 P.toile was introduced to electronic music and short after she opened her own record store Startbeat in her hometown Kiel in Northern Germany. Fuelled by her love for music, she started DJing and organizing events on a regular basis: her first own event series „Groove Complex“ gave P.toile the chance to train her DJ skills, playing alongside international DJs in front of big crowds. This was an important experience to get her name out there, to a national and international circuit.

In 2001 moved to Paris and started to work for the record Distributer Discograph and as a promoter for a club-bar in the heart of Paris, the Lizard Lounge.

There she met Reynold, who was already promoting French electronic music artists through his party Minimal Dancin” and later his freshly founded record label Trenton.

In 2005 P.toile moved to Berlin. Her work with Trenton started to grow, with a repertoire of international artists from Germany, France, Japan, Canada, Poland, Russia and the USA. At that point she founded Clique Bookings.

Soon her heart was led to a more surprising destination, the troubled Lebanon, and more precisely Beirut, where she was regularly DJing. Together with the Beirut-based DJ Jade (owner of the The Basement club) P.toile created a series of Red Cross Charity-Events called „To Beirut“.

Some of the clubs hosting this special event had been Berlin’s Watergate, Paris’ Rex Club and London’s The Key, among others. To Beirut” has also seen support by artists like Craig Richards, Tiefschwarz, DJ Hell, Mr. C, M.A.N.D.Y., Oliver Koletzki, Ewan Pearson, Tobi Neumann and others.

Through the years her sound developed from French house to minimal techno, while her main influences and roots - funk and soul of the seventies - can still be heard in her DJ sets.

P.toile’s releases on Trenton, Drehstrom, Gold & Liebe, Channels Recordings and Mothership are addressed to a more mature and music-conscious audience: her productions range from down-tempo to up-lifting minimal techno and airy emotional house, always spiced up with funk. Her Trenton debut „Sticklip EP“ with remixes of pan/tone (Sid LeRock) and Frank Martiniq immediately reached the top 50 of Groove Magazine.

Welcome, Till Von Sein!

[myspace]

“Who’s the Tillest?”

Despite his young age and his life-story filled with all sorts of different activities, Jan-Till Lüdtke aka Till von Sein has been involved into music for a while. He spent his youth on a skateboard, rapping in several bands and combos and was totally into Hip Hop culture before he started to DJ at the age of 21.

As a rapper he made himself a name in the Northern parts of Germany and managed to perform at bigger shows with some of the well known people from that scene at that time. Not entirely satisfied with it, Till started to focus more into DJing, which soon became his true love! Standing on stage by himself and playing music as opposed to rapping his own verses seemed for him to be the only and real way to express himself. Not limited to a single style, Till Von Sein’s DJ sets have built himself the reputation of a true music lover: while spinning the wheels of steel, he likes to play some straight techno / house records, occasionally dropping some rap classics or even a rock tune in a middle.
Till started to produce music in 2003. In 2005 he teamed up with his homie Aera who he knew for more than 10 years from their skateboarding and Hip Hop days. They released their very first record called “Angel of the A7” on the label
Trenton Records in May 2006, followed by a track on the Various Trenton 015 called “ANCSs”. The team put out a EP on the same label in February 2007 with a massive John Tejada RMX. This first release revealed Till and Aera’s musical genre as a mix in between funky house and old school Detroit music with a touch of tech house electro. Right after this first 12” they receive DJ support from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Luciano, Dirt Crew, M.A.N.D.Y., Funk D’Void or Sasse, all of them reacting enthusiastically to hear such of a funky groove in those dry minimal days.
Eventually, Till von Sein also started to produce on his own and released some fine 12″ in 2007 on the French label Bodytalk, the Swiss Imprint Morris Audio and Morris Audio City Sport and the German label Organic Domain, run by Dub Taylor aka Tigerskin. Feedback from guys like Loco Dice, Jimpster, Ripperton etc. was enormous!
And still there is more to come…

Watch out for Till Von Sein’s & Chopstick’s team effort in an upcoming release on the Hamburg-based label Baalsaal [beginning of 2009]!

Welcome, Zombie Disco Squad!

[myspace ZDS]

[BLOG :: Gutterbroadcast]

ZDS = Nathaniel Self & Lucas Hunter.

All we know about these two sympathetic fellas is that they are based in London where they run the infamous “Get Rude” night, DJ around the world in 80 days, party like the Muppet Show Animal and make undogmatic music [mingling 'back-to-the-roots' instrumentations, hifi percussions and all kinds of Southern American languages (especially Brazilian)] which is FUN to play and dance to.

We also know that it has been somewhat hard to obtain their productions in “regular” vinyl / download shops. So, you can consider yourself lucky [if you are not that much at home in the depths of the wild wild web]: we heard from some rather reliable sources that you will soon be able to get Zombie Disco Squad tracks and remixes on good old vinyl and highquality DRM-free MP3s / Waves … on a few labels near you. Oh yes!

What they say about themselves:

Zombies say YES: claude vonstroke, trumpets, tomtoms, baile funk, vans shoes, penfield, coffee, brazil, man recordings, tartlet recordings, dan m, berlin, london, house music, people that say please, jack daniels, vodka, sanpellegrino, bot, phra and the rest of the italian new wave, get rude, dj funk, lil wayne, frankie knuckles, african rhythms, brie & stilton, stickers, free clothes, partyharders, booty call.

Zombies say NO: new rave, breaks, blog house, dreadlocks, slow computers, bad mp3s, crap promos, writers block, rollerblades, mens cycling shorts, sandals, rain, bad design, bandwagon jumpers (suddenly like disco?), ryan air, nazis, cheeky promoters, skins, cheapskates.”

Welcome, Skoozbot!

[myspace]

I stumbled accross the name “Skoozbot” a while ago, when I was playing in a club in East Germany. Skoozbot’s track “Next to Monchhichi” was being pumped out on the soundsystem - I loved the bassline and the simple percussions, the stripped down raw groove. After decksharking it [or rather screensharking it - thank you Mignon ;)], I was a little surprised that this was a Plus8 release, as it seemed much more “accessible” and ‘groovy’ to me then most of the other stuff I knew from this seminal label. Finding out that Skoozbot is a new addition to the Plus8 / Minus posse, it was obvious that we had to invite el Skoozo for a special Halloween showcase.

Here is the official Skoozbot bio:

“Brian Connelly ( a.k.a. SKOOZBOT), an Indiana native and Michigan transplant, has long been interested in the interaction between humans and technology. This interest has been met in his love of electronic music, which is made by machines yet fueled by the soul. As a DJ over the past decade, Brian has never been satisfied simply blending two tracks together and has long sought to augment his mixing by incorporating the limitless possibilities provided by technology. Endless experimentation with both hardware and software has helped bridge the gap, but as technology continues to grow, so does Brian’s curiosity for using it to open up new possibilities.

This blend of the human and the electronic is further explored in his productions, where Brian aims to re-create instantaneous human emotions through electronic sounds. Although these snapshots of our consciousness can occur for just brief moments in our lives, they can continue on and be further evolved through music.”

Thank you Skoozbot!

Diskomafia is proud to announce Kandel’s “Familie Schroffenstein” EP, which tells the story of a weird family vacation full of surprises. The EP features 4 distinct dancefloor tracks that are bound to be loved by DJs for they tooly feel and by the partycrowd for their fun factor.

The title track “Familie Schroffenstein” ["Family Schroffenstein"] is an unusually squint piece of house music, where the main elements are a repetitive synthie melody mingled with pseudo-saxophone funkyness, both topping a wobbly bassline.

“Im Nagetiermuseum” ["In the rodent-museum"] is an ode to the Berlin nightlife, featuring an acidic bass, flying cut & paste sounds and odd percussive elements that generate a driving dancefloorkiller.

Whereas “Die Reise zum heiligen Berg” ["The journey to the holy mountain"] is the most ‘beautiful’ of the 4 tracks, it refers to a more ‘classic’ Detroit approach in a handcrafted analogue shell. Finally, “Die graue Herrin” ["The grey mistress"] is a mean straight functional and dirty techno track for dark moments.

>>>CLICK HERE to check out the “Familie Schroffenstein” microsite so you can find out more about the release and where to buy it.

“Familie Schroffenstein” is supported by San Francisco - resident Mr. Claude Vonstroke, “Die Graue Herrin” gets played by German Techno-combo Superflu.

“WORD!”

The question „what does Shir Khan spin?“ is like asking „what is a DJ?“, because that’s what Shir Khan aka Jan Simon Spielberger is first of all a DJ. A DJ who does not bound himself by styles but uses his extended knowledge to rock the crowd at any given moment. Didn’t Laurent Garnier drop Led Zeppelin in a techno-set, or Tiefschwarz blend in Grandmaster Flash with house? And not to forget teams like 2 Many Djs, Glimmers or Optimo, often mentioned in the same sentence as Mr. Khan.

Shir Khan, the DJ, describes his sound as “a mix full of Post Cash Pop, Disco-Rock, Aristocratic Booty Beats, Glitch, Eurocrunk, Hiptronica, Favela Funk, Mash-ups, Jackin House, Cheap Electronics&Pre-Madonna”.

Shir Khan, the producer, came a long way since masterminding Berlins Bastard Pop - revolution with his series of 12inch records (Broken Bootlegs), which he released together with Schall (Robosonic) and DJ Gaucho. The infamous bootleg Mastermix-CD “Copyright Candies” (Exploited/Kompakt) could be regarded as the kick-off for his career.

Right now, Shir Khan must be one of the busiest DJs in Berlin.
His diverse and eclectic sets full of pleasure and entertainment connected him to a wide range of events and promoters worldwide recognizing his unique talent.
He played on the bill with the Simian Mobile Disco, Digitalism, Justice, Bondo Do Role, Riot in Belgium, Yuksek, Peaches, Zoot Woman, Luke Vibert, Whomadewho, Klaxons and many others.

After the critically acclaimed release of his double-mix CD SHIR KHAN - MAXIMIZE! in mid-2007, Shir Khan has been busy touring Australia, Brazil (as support for LCD Soundsystem), Canada (as support für Mstrkrft), US (SXSW-Festival), UK, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Russia, Ukraine etc., hitting top venues such as Fabric in London, I Love Neon in Montreal, Melt! Festival and Transmediale in Germany, and Elektronika Festival in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

His remix for Bondo Do Role (out on Domino) has received great airplay by all the top cats in the DJ game. Furthermore, he did remixes for Ben Mono (Compost), Monosurround (Citizen), Larry Tee (Ultra), Act Yo Age (Sweat it ou!), Gameboy / Gamegirl (Sweat it out!), Holy Hail (Acth Recordigs), Purple Crush (Crushed Records), Princess Superstar (Central Station), The Jai-Alai-Savant (City Slang).

His very own label Exploited Records, with a “CI” that references to Pop-covers from the past and mashes them up, showcasts artists such as Adam Sky, Siriusmo, Malente&Dex and remix appearances by, among others, Riva Starr, Tacteel, the Crookers, Tomboy, Yuksek and Modeselektor.

In Berlin he has been throwing parties under the name of Berlin Battery, which is also a Blog he runs with 2 friends. Shir Khan also hosts his own weekly FM radioshow on Radio Fritz (every tuesday CET 20.00-22.00), with guests from Oliver $ to Munk or Busy P

If you are confused about all the above named artists, references, places and influences, don’t worry: you have the opportunity to get an insight into one of the facets of Shir Khans spinning style on BKI today… and if that’s not enough, and if your ears & bootie are calling for more dancefloor fun, come and see the man doing his thing live on the decks.

Welcome, Juho Kahilainen!

“Depressive Trance” from deep inside of Finland

This month, Juho Kahilainen graces us with his presence on this month’s BKI session. To promote his 2-tracker deep techno vinyl release (or rather, “Depressive Trance” vinyl release, as he’s jokingly calling his style “anti-climatic” atmospheric tracks filled with tension and warmth, combined with chrystal clear analogue sounds reminiscing of the snowclad landscapes in Northern Finland) coming up on Diskomafia soon, he did a DJ mix on 2 decks + 1 CD player for us. “I thought the feeling of the mix is right”, he pointed out.

Juho, who we met through our friend Jan Hertz from the Hamburg-based band .Computer.., is quite a character. We just HAD to take the biography he had written himself (and which he is also going public with) 1:1 cause we had rarely seen one like this before. Modesty? Wittiness? Strong opinions? Maybe all of these apply to Juho. But probably it’s more about him having fun making depressive trance. We love it. :)

Juho Kahilainen has been pushing tracks for a long time. He played his first gig in 1997 and to be honest, not much has happened after that. The bastard might have been lucky to release some shots on BPitch Control, Initial Cuts, Frozen North Recordings, Prologue Music and Diskomafia, but he is still doing the same stuff he did that time. We might ask him why he is still here? Normal people understand to stop when there is no progress.

Juho is a stubborn individual. As a musician his ‘career’ might have been an anti-climax with a lot of effort and not much achievements, but is there something else he could do? The poor bugger is not much of an athlete. You couldn’t imagine him as a model either. Let’s face the facts: he is good enough to be a DJ. Juho’s problem is that he wants to be a bit more than that. He believes that making music will take him somewhere. So far it hasn’t happened. Some people think it never will.

Do not feel sorry for him. It is possible that he even wrote this piece-of-shit text himself. He has chosen to live this way. Juho draws his inspiration from melacholy, depression and anxiety. The future is something to fear. It might be that this kind of self-pity and pathetic dystopian visions feed him as an artist. What a loser.”

Terveisin!

Welcome, Paul Brtschitsch!

[myspace]

Paul Brtschitsch was born in Berlin where he lived until the age of 10 and than moved to Frankfurt. Stamped by the early times of the legendary OMEN in Frankfurt, he discovered his love for electronic music and started playing e-music as a DJ at parties in the region. In 1992 he got his first Synthesizer and got into producing tracks.

Paul established the label Taksi in the late 90s along with André Galluzzi. The label acquired quite some underground prestige in 2000, when Richie Hawtin licensed their track “Schneesturm” for his label Plus 8 and released the maxi with his own remix in 2001.

Paul gained more and more production experience and started releasing on different labels, like Force Inc. and Ongaku.

His debut album “Surftronic” appeared in February 2000 on Frisbee - a year later, his second longplayer named “Venex” was released: sexy and deep music with an unmistakable groove. Finally, Paul completed his album trilogy on Frisbee with “Memory”.

Pauls musical interests developed over time, he started working on different projects such as the downbeat triphop album with Dr. Atmo “Change your life” (released on a sub-label of Kitty Yo). In addition he got several remix requests, like Snap “Rhythm is a dancer” and Pascal F.E.O.S. “Overflow”. He also produced music for two pavilions at the Expo 2000 in Germany. Two more TripHop albums followed in 2005 and 2006.

Meanwhile Paul kept on performing live in Europe, Japan, Russia and USA.
In 2006 he released a record on the Belgian label Music Man and one on the label Ostgut Ton, affiliated to the infamous Berghain club in Berlin. Paul, who in the meantime has moved from Frankfurt back to Berlin, founded his new label+platform Rootknox and started co-producing Anja Schneider for her releases on Mobilee. His solo release (”Hook Up”) came out on Mobilee’s sub label Leena. At the same time Cologne’s label Karmarouge released their birthday compilation “Traumschwiegersöhne”, featuring the track “Morning Glory”, a collaboration between Gabriel Ananda and himself.

After working hard on Anja’s debut album “Beyond the Valley”, Mr. Brtschitsch is back on track with his own productions and touring with his live performance, which he is showcasing at the Berlin Kreuzberg Institut… Dankeschön!

Watch out for Paul’s release “Bridge Itch”, out in mid SEPTEMBER on Wolfskuil Records!

Welcome, Fabrice Lig aka Soul Designer!

[myspace]

“Where Techno Soul Meets Futuristic Funk, you will find Fabrice Lig’s Music”…

A Soul Designer’s essence is undeniably connected to the principles of art – which means, human activities concerning aesthetic manifestations in order to stimulate the senses, bring emotions and ideas, rather than looking for commercial results. These are the purposes that always guided the life of Fabrice Lig, a talented electronic artist that is today a huge example of forward-thinking mind to all the new generations of computer software producers.

Born near Brussels in the city of Charleroi, Fabrice Ligny used to be a History & Geography teacher. It was his musical passion which brought him to the forefront of the electronic scene of his country since his first musical steps. After starting to buy records and getting into the groove, he began to produce still young, with the help of a broad musical background that pointed to the many periods of underground music he had been through in the last twenty five years. From the breakdance era when he was still a teenager to the rise of the house scene of Chicago, the alternative European electronic scene and the techno sound from Detroit, Fabrice absorbed it all. Because of its Sci-Fi Soul essence, Detroit Techno would become his strongest influence ; melted with his other influences, it gave him an eclectic touch that would define his sound in the future.

Detroit Techno’s principles gave Fabrice Lig the idea of combining soul-aesthetics with the futuristic, just like the standards of Science Fiction’s books and movies: sophisticated atmospheres, seductive melodies, chords and rhythms of beauty similar to those of the Motor-City artists. Fabrice’s natural attraction to these ambiances brought him closer to Kevin Saunderson in particular: Fabrice made a remix of a track called “Banjo” for Kevin’s alias E-Dancer in 1999. The feeling of intellectual proximity had approached Fabrice Lig to the Detroit scene to the point that he was considered “part of the Detroit musical culture itself” according to the words of Underground Resistance’s head Mad Mike. With that E-Dancer release, Fabrice became the first white European to release on the legendary Detroit Techno label KMS.

Fabrice Lig’s production career included releases on other conceptual labels such as Laurent Garnier’s F-Com, Raygun, 7th City, Kanzleramt, Motech, Delsin, and more recently Third Ear and Versatile. Fabrice moreso collaborated with Japanese techno superstar Ken Ishii on his last album “Sunriser” and once again on the new Soul Designer’s album.

Fabrice commits himself to the essence of his artistic soul with his alias Soul Designer, performing live on acclaimed festivals and events such as Montreux Jazz Festival, Sonar in Barcelona, Detroit Fuse-In Festival, I Love Techno in Belgium, Printemps de Bourges Festival from France (with Jean-Michel Jarre on stage) and countless respectable clubs. His new Soul Designer album came out in early 2008, together with an international tour called “Evolutionism World Live Tour”. Don’t miss it…!

Welcome, Stephan Bodzin!

[web]

“Authenticity is everything - without it everything would appear to be nothing more than a hollow shell”, says someone who has found himself at the centre of the international techno scene since
2006. Stephan Bodzin: the passionate musician from Bremen has become a heavy influence for a lot of producers worldwide. With his album “Liebe ist…” (’Love is…’) Stephan Bodzin has reached yet another high point in his career.

As the son of an experimental musician his musicaljourney was set from an early age; it was only a matter of time before Stephan would fall in love with electronic music. While he composed music for several prestigious European theaters, he discovered his passion for club sounds. His talent was soon discovered and producers such as Oliver Huntemann, Thomas Schumacher and Marc Romboy queued up to work with Stephan.

Due to the unique character of his music, he has established himself as an icon of the international techno scene. Most recently he has remixed songs for well-known bands such as Depeche Mode, Booka Shade and The Knife. His releases can be found on labels such as Get Physical, Datapunk, Gigolo, Systematic and Giant Wheel.

Stephan describes himself as a “melody man” - “after all, it’s the melodies that endure”, he says. The responses to his productions seem to confirm this, as his organic analogue and spontaneous sound is loved in clubs worldwide (DJ Hell himself has dubbed his style as the “Bremen sound”).

After having gained experience with the infamous series Rekorder, which he runs together with Oliver Huntemann and Jan Langer, it was a logical move for Stephan to create his own label which he called Herzblut in 2006. As part of the label-conglomerate Plantage 13, he has found the ideal creative structure for his work within this structure.
“This was a massive step forward”, he explains, “I produce music to share it, and I can experience this great feeling in each of my gigs”.
Stephan’s music is as polarizing as he is, both as a DJ and live artist. “Authenticity is everything…”

Watch out for Stephan’s release “Bremen-Ost”, out NOW on Herzblut!

Welcome, Rodriguez Junior!

[web]

Not many electronic music producers manage to release award-winning albums, sell shedloads of 12′’s and perform the world over before they hit the big 3-0. Brussels-based French-Spaniard Rodriguez Junior - aka Olivier M - has done exactly that. As a half of French electro act The Youngsters he’s already packed more into his time in the industry than some do over their whole career - and he’s still just 29.

Over the past six years he and his partner in crime have released loads of EPs and remixed tracks of dozens artists.
Their two studios albums - like their singles, released on Laurent Garnier’s label F-Com - won a string of awards and accolades from some of dance music’s biggest names. This success catapaulted them onto the international circuit, giving them the platform to take their electrifying live act to some of the biggest club stages and festivals in Europe, South America and Asia, performing with artists such as The Chemical Brothers and Massive Attack.

Now living and working in the Belgian capital Brussels, Olivier’s Rodriguez project is the product of an almost schizophrenic brand of creativity, and a thirst for the new and unexpected.
Going solo offers something valuable to him: the freedom to experiment, step off the release / gig / release merry-go-round, and break out of the musical “mind-ghetto” that so many great acts end up slipping into.
The Rodriguez alter-ego represents his own productive journey of re-discovery and is getting more and more successful, with releases already lined up on labels like Leena, Giant Wheel and Boxer.
Drawing inspiration from artists as diverse as Stockhausen, LFO, Carl Craig, Eric Satie, Kraftwerk or Michel Polnareff, Oliviers’ spirit of adventure translates into music that can’t easily be pigeon-holed.
While his music is all electronic, and put together largely in his own MLab Mk5 studio in Brussels, his music can be leftfield and experimental or rich, melodic and poppy - depending on his mood. Musical freedom is Oliviers motto… we at the Berlin Kreuzberg Institut are looking forward to hear this motto translate into new tracks - coming soon from Oliviers’ studio in Brussels.

Watch out for the new Rodriguez Junior single “Pina Colada”, out in AUGUST on Mothership:

Welcome, Deadset!

[web]

We said 2007 would be the year of Deadset and it has proved to be just that as both the singles and the album “Keys Open Doors” on Frontroom Recordings have received rave reviews from the press; DJ’s and house music lovers the world over. DJ’s such as Jesse Rose, Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos, Andrew Weatherall and Claude VonStroke have been playing their tracks everywhere to great effect.

The duo formally known as Cass + Mangan have previously remixed the likes of Muse, Miss Kittin, Röyksopp, Tiefschwarz, Justin Timberlake, and the Scissor Sisters. They have had releases and remixes on labels such as Fine, Blu Fin, Souvenir, Made To Play, DirtyBird, Moon Harbour, Wall Of Sound and Tsuba.

Deadset have recently played gigs to packed crowds at Weekend, Watergate and Panorama Bar in Berlin. They have also tweaked out their sound at The Key, The End and Fabric in London to name a few. Recently they have been performing live shows that showcase the tracks from the album Keys Open Doors. Deadset are also a rather accomplished DJ duo and have recently done one of the feted Pod Cast for the Resident Advisor website, which was considered one of the best of 2007…

Cass + Mangan is dead. LONG LIVE Deadset! Their live appearance on Berlin Kreuzberg Institut will sport some of the finest wonky house, addictive future disco, and zippy playful grooves you will find on air… fun guaranteed!

Watch out for the Deadset remix of Robosonic “Kaputt in Hollywood”, out 1st July on Diskomafia!

Welcome, Style of Eye!

Lock up your genres - Linus Eklöw, aka Style Of Eye, is ripping up the rule book with his debut artist album, difficult to describe as anything other than the sort of music that makes you want to call your boss and tell them you’re not coming back to work on Monday.

The Stockholm born and based DJ/producer is making a name for himself in techno, but his productions are essentially a journey through everything from techno to house and elektro via raw percussion and minimal, floaty melodies and downright weird noises.

Both intelligent but jaw-wobblingly satisfying at the same time, Style Of Eye’s productions are testament to the hotbed of talent springing forth from the underground scene. After growing up in a jazz and soul oriented family, graduating from banging pots and pans to a drumkit aged 10, he realised electronic music was his calling after getting his first computer aged 15 and making “weird downtempo dubbeat and trip hop“. DJing upbeat drum and bass followed at 16, and Linus was a firm fixture in the studio before long, developing his unique style of music with releases and remixes on such labels as Classic Recordings, Tiny Sticks and Rabid Records.

His most recent productions on Dirtybird and John Dahlbäck’s Pickadoll label have been immense - “The Big Kazoo” E.P on Dirtybird, was followed up by “The Prophet” on Pickadoll, and the album, out in September 2008 on the same label, will be preceded by his new single “Girls” in May.

As you’d expect from someone who cites influences as diverse as Stevie Wonder, nineteenth century classical composer Edvard Grieg, and Yello, Style of Eye isn’t keen to be pigeonholed. His moniker comes from a desire to put everything out under one name, regardless of what it sounds like… “Since I take in so much different music and put it in a blender I wanted to be able to put everything I see and that inspires me into one project. This album is a huge step from my first release but you can still hear that it’s me“, says Linus.

The album, which features vocals from the likes of Stephen Simmonds and Emmma, comprises Style of Eye’s productions mixed together: “it was a way to make stuff I could use in my sets, which I build around my productions. I guess my gigs are a bit like artist sets in a way, but it’s just me and my vinyl and CDs on stage. The album was almost a year in the making, and felt like the perfect time to try and put things in a bigger perspective rather than concentrate on two tracks. So I wanted to make a dancefloor album but one that could also be heard as one CD, that could travel through different styles, but you could still connect the dots between the first and last tracks“, says Linus.

With a remix for Moby under his belt and a tour in the pipeline, Style of Eye is proof that cutting edge house isn’t Sweden’s only hottest export…

Watch out for the the new Style of Eye single “Girls” out NOW on Pickadoll, ahead of the Style of Eye debut album “Duck, Cover and Hold”, out in September 2008! :

Welcome, Riva Starr!

“We get really deep into the tracks we’re producing, flip them and cut them in so many different ways, all to get the heaviest groove possible”.

The Italian producer based in Ghettotown London first released as breaks DJ Madox. His own tracks and remixes earned him a Breakspoll nomination as best breaks producer and remixer of 2007. While the noisier releases kept rolling, he was also working on a quieter, more contemplative sideline under his real name, the Stefano Miele project. Roots music redrawn as low-fi, downbeat tunes.

The real deal now is his alter ego Riva Starr. Drawing on the Brazilian and Latin rhythms of the Miele project and his own roots, Riva Starr plunders the best in nu-rave, batty bass and beeping, burping synth lines to create a dirty, messy dancefloor affair. His first appearance on Jesse Rose’s ubercoolische Frontroom label with the Thizzle EP led to a release on Claude vonStroke’s pivotal Dirtybird label with the WTF?! EP, followed up by the percussive Latino dreckshouse track La Conga. To come within the next months are a release on the Get Physical sublabel Kindisch, as well as more nasty dancefloor action on his own newly founded label Snatch

… “It’s not like he has a big trademark bassline, or some sort of analog synth style (although he does have some mad analog synths), instead he incorporates a range of different sounds. It seems like the main thing that ties each song together is just that each one has an awesome hook of some kind. Music is all about having a cool sounding something these days, it’s not about ripping out some big guitar solo, or having a really musically sound piece (how many songs are based around three notes these days, but sound fresh as), Riva Starr is easily on top of all that…” ( - Scatterblog)

“We get really deep into the tracks we’re producing, flip them and cut them in so many different ways, all to get the heaviest groove possible”.

Amidst the countless DJ’s and producers working in the burgeoning Chicago house scene, Santiago & Bushido stand apart from the rest with a blend of heavy house-tinged funk-tech tracks that has given them critical moxie in Chicago and beyond.

Chris Santiago and Tim Bush host the reknowned Jack Fridays, a weekly Friday night residency at Zentra Nightclub, attracting underground house crowds for more than six years. The duo has been creating a buzz as of late, as the “For What” EP on Potty Mouth was released to critical praise and support from dj’s across the globe including Switch, Jesse Rose, and Johnny Fiasco - with their single “Head Trick” climbing the charts on Beatport.com and holding the nr.1 download spot for a few weeks.

Coming in June on Diskomafia [vinyl / mp3]: a kickass Santiago & Bushido remix of Robosonic “Kaputt in Hollywood”.

In addition to belting out club tracks, Santiago and Bushido have been involved with Chicago native Colette’s 2007 artist album Push for OM Records.

One thing about us is we’re not afraid to do a deep track or a totally hardcore track…as long as it works on the dance floor and is pushing the sound forward, it works for us..”

… Let there be JACK ! …
