“We got the Rythym”

This is the boys story in their own words:

“… We, two lovers of the arts, science, sports, languages, funk and techno, are Renaissance Man - a platform for contemporary dance music.

2007 We first met through working in the same architecture office in Helsinki. The office was commissioned to design a club, the number one underground venue in Helsinki, where we as a type of compensation started our own monthly night ..NOW!…

2008 After a year the sound of the night boiled down to a playful and modern sound of house and we started bringing over several international acts we found relevant. Although the night was far from a financial success, inspired by it we started producing our own music together. Renaissance Man was born in the summer of 2008 after we name ourselves self-ironically referring to the culture of multidisciplinary creatives inhabiting our social circle. We got a great kick start when Dave “Switch” Taylor signed our very first track ‘Spraycan’ to his label Dubsided.

2009 After a long wait the ‘Spraycan EP’ came out to much success in April. Soon after it we signed our track ‘Rythym’ to the Kitsune Maison 7 compilation and released a second EP on the ambitious Parisian Sound Pellegrino label. Its title track ‘What Is Guru’ became somewhat of an underground hit. Meanwhile remix requests started to drop and we got rather busy with them. We have remixed this year, amongst others, Brodinski & Noob on Turbo, Crystal Fighters, Delphic, Health and Le Corpse Mince De Francoise.

A mere year after producing our first track together things are looking bright. We relocated to Berlin in June 2009, release our third EP in April 2010 on Made To Play, tour Europe intensively, have shows booked in Australia, New Zealand and China towards the end of the year and have our tracks and remixes played by everybody from Jesse Rose to Tiga to Tomboy to likes of radio giants as Pete Tong and Annie Mac.

So no time for rest as our house has an open plan!”

Over the course of time, Niklas Worgt has used his share of project names.
His most well-known would have to be Dapayk.
Since 1993 Niklas has crafted his own tracks. Cuts with Drum & Bass and Breakbeat sport the same difference as Pumpin’ Techno and Techhouse. As the Drum & Bass live act “Frauds in White” he started to make a name for himself on the barely developed breakbeat scene of middle Germany in the mid-90’s. As “Sonstware” he held residence at parties and stepped into the late 90’s under his Dapayk moniker. There were a few years however between then and 2001 when he released his first record. From that release, his Dapayk AKA was taken as the cornerstone for his various projects under the label name Mo’s Ferry Productions, a label for ‘Rocking Frickel Sound’ - which he founded together with his school friend Jan Langhammer.

In cooperation with his wife Eva Padberg there came the project Dapayk & Padberg. After the first single was released in 2005, a first album was released reaching the years top-10 charts of the magazines Groove, De-bug and Raveline as well as bringing Niklas a Top-10 spot in the producer charts. His sound can be charachterized as “Prickling” displays the art of balancing electronic music’s Minimal, Electronica and Breakbeat forms.

Dapayk’s Soloalbum was released in 2006, a second Dapayk&Padberg Album followed in 2007. Both longplayers got much respect from the press and the dancefloors. They also received the “Style Award - Best Domestic Performer” by German music mag “Musikexpress”.
To diversify the labelsound, Niklas and Jan founded the Mo’s Ferry daughter labels Fenou and Rrygular as the playgrounds for electronica and minimal techno respectively. In addition to his work as Dapayk, Niklas releases techno tracks as “Marek Bois” on Trapez and Rrygular since the beginning of 2006.
Besides releasing on his own labels, Dapayk has released on labels such as Karloff, Textone, Orac, Contexterrior, Trapez, Resopal and Friends of Tomorrow.

Dapayk’s 10 year anniversary is coming up in 2010. You can expect the release of a new album with incredible remixes as well as a live tour.

“Dusty Dance”

The Daft Punk Album of 1997 changed the view for electronic music of many people, so it did for Marcel Knopf. He became frenetic with collecting vinyl with the aim to stand behind the counter one day: Together with Matt John (Perlon) he founded the record store “Sine Music” in Nordhausen, in 2000. Their tiny, pretty but illegal parties in the basement of the store were a breeding ground of Minimal in Thuringia, an part of Germany which was lacking that kind of music. Those parties also contributed to Marcel Knopf becoming resident DJ of the club “Alte Weberei” - his DJ sets cover a wide range of music and reflect his preferences for Dub, House, Broken Beats and experimental Techno.

“Sine Music” was a meeting place for DJs and offered musical alternatives. It was just a matter of time until the Mo’s Ferry label guys Dapayk and Jan Langhammer were to meet him. This led to Marcel taking over A&R of the label Mo’s Ferry Prod, as well as starting to become involved in producing himself.
Since 2002 Marcel Knopf works together with Dapayk on own tracks. “Holpergeist EP” was the beginning of experimental club releases, adding a special sound to the label.

“Sine Music” opened a subsidiary in Berlin - but unfortunately went bankrupt in the digital revolution, which meant sinking sales figures for vinyl. Nonetheless, Marcel moved back to his native city Berlin, where he continued to work for Mo’s Ferry.
In 2006, he compiled and mixed the “bits to phono” compilation, featuring tracks from netlabels only - in contrast to that, his love for vinyl grew stronger and he limited himself to DJing solely with vinyl.
12” releases like “Lloyd/Narain”, “Thinkaboutyou”, “Plomosis” followed on the sub label Rrygular.
After a long absence from Mo’s Ferry, Marcel comes back in July 2009 with a vinyl single, a teaser for his upcoming album “Dusty Dance”, which is available in stores since autumn 2009.

Wie entsteht Neues bei der Produktion elektronischer Tanzmusik?

‘Hier gibt es meine Diplomarbeit zum Thema “Wie entsteht Neues bei der Produktion elektronischer Tanzmusik? Eine explorative ethnografische Erhebung” zum Runterladen. Sie entstand im Zeitraum von Oktober 2008 bis September 2009 im Rahmen des Abschlusses meines Studiums Soziologie technikwissenschaftlicher Richtung am Institut für Soziologie an der TU Berlin.

Da viele von euch selbst Musik am PC produzieren, werden meine Beschreibungen womöglich interessant für euch sein. Jedoch ist das kein Text, der erklärt wie man gute Musik produziert. Er verbindet die ethnografisch erhobene  Beschreibung der Praxis von House/Techno-Produktion im Homerecording-Studio mit der Einbettung dieser Produktion in ihren kulturell ermöglichenden und strukturierenden Kontext: Der Techno-Szene.

Bei der Erklärung des Zusammenhanges reduziert er die Produktion nicht auf benutze Technologien oder “best practices” der Produktion (wie üblicherweise in Tutorials im Internet, Büchern, oder bei direktem Austausch zwischen Produzenten), sondern versteht sie als Teil eines breiten kulturellen Zusammenhanges (der Techno-Szene), mit wirtschaftlich strukturieremdem Verwertungsrahmen, sinnstiftenden und strukturierenden historisch herausgebildeten Wissenspraktiken (Genres, “best practices” der Produktion, Produktionsmuster, etc.), kommerziellen technologischen Ermöglichungen (Computer, Homerecording-Studio, Software) und  einer internationalisierten Infrastruktur an Clubs, DJs, Produzenten, Clubgängern, Vertrieben, Medien, Booking-Agenturen, Labels usw. usf.

Keinemusik is not the type of record label as you know it. When putting out a record, the guys will wrap it up personally, refine it with artistic splendour, stamp it and seal it with a kiss, before it ends up in the stores or on your turntable. Question is: Why let someone else do the filthy job, when you can get it done as lousy by yourself. Or maybe even a bit better. Keinemusik is a DIY-operation. Not, because it makes that imposing impression or because they like to wallow in nostalgia, just because it feels right. Keinemusik is a label-, booking- and partynetwork. Everything happening there gets onto Keinemusik.com on time and bilingual. But above all, Keinemusik is the spirit that moves the collective behind the imprint. The Keinemusik-Clique would rather throw a BBQ than meditate over some businessplan and whatnot. Some of the guys are putting out records, bringing the elegance and the sexappeal back into the Deep- and Techhouse-game. Others are more into the mixing of records for entertainment purposes, some are multimedia-knowitalls, some spread the word on blogs or in magazines, some are into producing art with insane appreciation value. If there’s a credo, it would be: you don’t necessarily need to be overly serious to be taken seriously. Welcome to the party, brothers and sisters!

Techno’s biggest flaw is its self-referencial tendency. You know the deal, the common contemporary DJ/Producer steals an Underground Resistance-Record from his older brother at the age of 16 (biographical details may vary, not to impair the facts, though), thus presuming to have found the holy grail (what, of course, nobody is claiming to deny).

His world is shrinking down to Detroit, Chicago, New York and Berlin within the following years, he’ll equip himself with records and turntables and not look over the rim of his MKII ever again.

Adam Ports biography is different. Adam was Hardcore, when he was 16. No, not Rotterdam-Hardcore. We’re talking New York-, Boston- and Washington D.C.-Hardcore here. It’s a past that he still lives up to, cultivating it in his vegetarian-straight-edge-lifestyle. After that there was HipHop. He got in touch with turntablism, discovered his love for vinyl and evolved to be a skilled DJ for the first time. Then, finally came Techno. This way of tracing down spaces, giving one the best possible chance of self-development, is the essential reason for Ports presence being so unique. There’s no scene-dictated tunnel view in his activities, there is only a pointed emphasis on style, on groove and sophistication. An emphasis, that, because it’s informed by Dub, Danchall, Rap, Soul or even Psychedelic Rock, is advanced enough to always shine through the inflationary characteristic of the genre as notably original. That applies to both, his productions and his DJ-sets. What Adam Port is laying his hands on might have its place within the parameters of House and Techno, but it’s always more than that. It’s his style.

You may not have heard so much from André (aka &ME) so far. Instead of the flash and glitter associated with most of his producer colleagues, he’s preferred to stay in the shadows, co-producing and ghost writing for artists like DJ Hell and Terranova.

Now after putting out his first solo single on Keinemusik, which was supported by all the key players (Front Room label boss Jesse Rose, Luke Solomon, Gabriel Ananda, Danny Tenaglia and Dubfire plus many more) &ME is finally ready to ‘go public’ as they say. He may have taken some time to figure out his own style of blending Techno and House music but now he’s out there’s really no escape. With a name like an attention deficit child’s mantra it’s a wonder he stayed ‘in’ so long.

Chances are, you’ve heard of Rampa before. Sure, he’s known for coming up with the most elaborate staches in the game, he’s got imposing skills when it comes to throw BBQs and riding scooters and whatnot, but we’re talking something different here. Rampa has a history of producing acts that found their way directly into the charts. Some of his collaborations include Lottergirls, Terranova and Princess Superstar. But since he put out his first EP entitled “Grill Royal” and the single “Tanz auf mir” on TNT/Terranova Recordings in 2008, he made a name of himself quite instantly.

Recommended by his fellow colleagues A-Trak and LCD Soundsystem, Nike Shoes approached him and requested a track for their campaign. The result was “AM 1990”.One of his more recent projects would be an albumproduction together with Nomi of Hercules & Love Affair fame. The first single out of this cycle is soon to be released on Rebirth. Plus there are a lot more things to come on Keinemusik, his own little D.I.Y.-cosmos, being not only label, but also crew of likeminded Djs, producers and friends. Just recently he released his Keinemusik-debut with “Wife & Man” and is working on remixes soon to be released on Get Physical and Front Room Recordings.

If he’s not spitting out new material, Rampa is likely to be found behind some turntables between Berlin and New York, representing his own definition of Techno and House, bridging the gap between deepness and elation. Never taking things too seriously, apart from those serious grooves he’s got in his pockets.

Crossing borders is a familiar experience to David Mayer. Though being born in south Germany, he spent most of his youth living in Norway and (for a change) in Lanzarote, before Berlin happened to become his home in 2004. As he prefers thinking outside the box, Mayer has always been equally interested in experimenting with diverse forms of music, no matter what musical genre they derive from, although his passion for funked up and heavily pounding 4/4 beats clearly dominates his creative output. Both when spinning records and producing tracks, he is presenting his own interpretation of catchyness, mixing up Techno and House, adding a little deepness, but always keeping an eye on making his audience shake it like a polaroid picture.

His dedication finds its way in several musical excursions as a ghost-/coproducer or audio engineer. Only leaving his desk in order to indulge some serious clubbing, you can be sure this guy knows about priorities. Supervising the successful releases of his fellow combatant Rampa on Terranova Recordings is just one example.

As a founding member of the artists collective and label Keinemusik, David Mayer accounts for pieces like the newsworthy “Fun Girl” remix for Jessica6 and is currently involved in the album producion with Jessica6-singer Nomi of Hercules & Love Affair. But of course, he is also working on the next thing to tie in with his “Nacktenordner EP”, which was released on Keinemusik just recently. Be sure that there are some serious undertakings in the process, that we all should have an ear open for.

“Work the walls!”

Sean Williams aka Worthy grew up around Washington DC in the early days of Deep Dish, Scott Henry and the early American rave scene. In the late 90’s after moving to New York City, he met good friend Justin Martin (eventually becoming flatmates for long years ;)) and was exposed to the sounds of people like LTJ Bukem, Stacey Pullen and Sasha. These artists greatly influenced his early ear while the expanding dance music scene encouraged him to play records of all genres: from hip hop to breaks to techno and drum ‘n’ bass.

In 2001 Worthy moved to San Francisco. He set up his studio and began producing house and techno music and DJing around the city. He later conspired with Christian Martin, Justin Martin and Claude VonStroke to co-create a fresh take on outdoor parties, rightly named Dirtybird. The Dirtybird parties have quickly become an institution for San Francisco die-hards and a destination for international travelers.

2006 brought the launch of Worthy’s label, Anabatic Records. Originally intended as an outlet for the release of his own music, Anabatic soon branched out to take on new artists. The label has been providing a steady stream of high quality tech house and has been gaining the praises of top DJs and Producers around the globe for its edgy groovy sound.

In 2007 Worthy broke out as a producer with his release of “Irst_Te?” on Dirtybird, the “Crack El” EP on Leftroom, and the “Bass Quake” and “Mummer” EPs on Anabatic. As well as doing remixes for Curfew, OM, Utensil, and Tentigo Records. In 2008 Worthy released his underground hit “Work The Walls” and its accompanying music video has given fans a glimpse into the la la land of his mind. He followed this up with his “Madcap” EP and remixes on Lot49, Fresh Meat, and of course Anabatic. Worthy’s music production has been showing up on DJ charts across the world and has been played by everyone from Carl Cox to Sven Vath to Ben Watt.

With no signs of slowing down in 2009, IDJ Magazine called Worthy one to watch in the new year. “Belfast Massive”

John aka Yankee Zulu’s fascination with dance music started at the tender age of 14 when he acquired his first set of turntables and spent hours upon hours getting to grips with the art of beat mixing in Belfast.

He was first influenced by heavyweights like Carl Cox and Joey Beltram who were playing guest spots at the Hellraiser raves held in the Ulster hall in Belfast in the early nineties. On the local front influences came in the form of David Holmes and Ian McCready who ran the legendary SugarSweet parties. As a result of all this he quickly developed a love for all things house and techno, something that remains evident in his productions today.

He would religiously scour local record shops every weekend looking for the freshest sounds he could find, and bombard his friends with his weekly mix tapes. John regularly attended Timmy Stewart and Mark Bell’s Digital Boogie and Tsunami parties and got a real taste of proper electronic music by hearing what  guests like Chris Duckenfield, Hipp-E, Miguel Migs and Ralph Lawson were up to behind the decks.
Around the same time John (not to do things by halves) passed 6 mixes onto Shine and Stiff Kitten head honcho Alan Simms, resulting in a booking not long after. After a few stellar performances John was soon asked to become an official Shine and Stiff Kitten resident and put in performances across both venues, playing alongside the likes of Damian Lazarus, Andrew Weatherall, Freeform Five, Paul Woolford, Agoria, Green Velvet and many more.

Production was the next logical step so John experimented in the studio as the Sigma Kids, releasing two tracks on ISHO Recordings. It was later decided that he should go into the studio with Timmy Stewart to work on some music, which was promptly picked up by Silicone Soul’s Darkroom Dubs imprint, and so the Jet Project was born. Gaining more studio knowledge and confidence, John started his solo project Yankee Zulu, which leaned more towards his love of filthy jacking house sounds.  After sending out demos, a myspace friendship was struck up with Worthy, label boss of San Francisco-based Anabatic Records. His debut material dropped there in 2008, further tracks, remixes and collaborations with Worthy have since seen the light on Utensil Recordings, Om Records, Playtime and Anabatic.

…während andere schlafen und sich für einen harten kommenden Arbeitstag vorbereiten, wird in Berlin auch unter der Woche zu elektronischer Tanzmusik gefeiert – und das wie am Wochenende und nicht erst seit kurzem. Es gibt kaum einen Wochentag, an dem nicht mindestens 1 – 2 Techno-Partys sogar noch Auswahlmöglichkeiten für die Feierwilligen anbieten. Eine große Anzahl technoaffiner Lebenskünstler, Freiberufler, Touristen, Arbeitsloser, Studenten und auch “Arbeitsfreinehmer” sorgt für ausreichenden Zulauf.

Das Berlin Mitte Institut (Fresh Meat, Kandel und Sacha Robotti) legte gesammelt und mit Freunden die ganze Nacht auf der spektakulären Dienstagswelt auf und fing Stimmen der Veranstalter, Barleute, Türsteher und natürlich Besucher in Live-Interviews ein, um dem interessierten Zuschauer und Zuhörer einen Einblick in Berlins Unter-der-Woche-Feierszene” zu geben.

Half a year ago, we got asked by 5 Design students from the Georg-Simon-Ohm Hochschule in Nürnberg Germany (GRATTLER PRODUCTIONS = Robert Gruss, Florian Leitl, Kristina Peter, Sebastian Schierwater, Nils Strehlow) if they could use a track of our ROBOSONIC album “STURM UND DRANG” to make a music video for their 3rd semester Film course.

The outcome of their intense teamwork is the “SPRACHFEHLER” music video. It’s about pills, obsession, a little man living inside a head, about drinking cleaning agent, a Dirndl-lady playing the saxophone, about parallel universes, surfing on smarties, dreamy stuff and funky music.

Whilst other kids learned walking, the apocalyptic Germano-Italian brothers Amedeo & Daniel Malagia aka. Deo & Z-Man started creating their wicked flow. This was brought to perfection since they graduated from basic education studies in century-sessions at the basement studios, as well as performing gigs in front of nice perspiring catholic highschool graduates. Neither extreme atmospheric conditions nor acute schizophrenic moods can’t stop the Mafiosibros producing tracks by using an electric raster microphone combined with an 8000 Voltage battery. Without exaggeration, these tunes bring tears to an Almöhi’s eyes. Even with eight fold gravitation and special reinforced cardboard in their head, these two DJs create cocktails out of their vinyl. All this and even more is definitely reflected in their bit-cell sounds which are also handled as mega-hits in their home country.

When you scream out now: “Stop! Isn’t godlike grandeur in times of generic maculation dictatorship strictly forbidden?” Then we just say: “What???”

(As the Artists put it themselves: “The English press release makes even less sense than the German version!”)

Cotumo & The Ascent met behind the decks in spring 2008 at one of those special openair parties in Berlin which start as a gathering for friends and turn into a park-rave of thousand euphoric people.

Cotumo has been establishing his reputation as a well known local matador in Berlin since 2004 with his DJ-sets at Clubs like the WMF, Arena or Ritter Butzke, and many festivals in and around Berlin. He has also spun records at parties in London, Wales, Turin, Graz, Zurich and Moscow and broadcasted mixes on stations like Deepmix.ru, Proton Radio, RTS.FM and many more. Since 2008 Cotumo has intensified his passion for produceing his own music. His first solo production ‘Underkill EP’ appeared in May 2009 on 3rd Wave Music.

The Ascent acquired his skills as a DJ and producer in the North of Germany and moved to Berlin in early 2008. He looks back at a busy discography: he has won remix contests hosted by D.Diggler and Carl Cox and has released solo productions, as well as collaborations with Christian Fischer on Definition Records and Whirlpoolsex.

Currently, the solo artists Cotumo & The Ascent focus their energy on a collaboration: Aka Aka.
Under contract with Oliver Koletzki’s label Stil Vor Talent, their debut “Voegeln EP” was released in March 2009. Supported by the likes of Dubfire, Claude VonStroke and Troy Pierce, their track “Woody Woodpecker” hopped into the Beatport Main Charts within three days and stayed there for weeks.

Besides their busy release plan, Aka Aka play live and as DJs in Berlin clubs like Rechenzentrum, Maria, Watergate, Arena Club and Dice. In summer 2009 their funky minimal sound got them gigs in Zürich, Madrid, Moscow, Turin and more German cities.

Watch out for “non-conform minimal and techhouse influenced by swing, jazz, balkan, funk and other funny but danceable music” on the new-born label Burlesque Musique (founded by Aka Aka in August 2009).

“Qu’est ce que je ferais sans sucre?”

After cutting her teeth on San Francisco’s underground music scene throughout the 1990s with photography, graphic/web design, and event promotion, Susan Langan aka Qzen commenced her DJ career as the decade closed. With a nod to the classics, she’s delved deep into the forefront of future music, allowing crowd reaction to direct — but not dictate — her selection.

In her nine years of experience, Qzen’s skills as a DJ have taken her to Canada and Mexico, as well as numerous cities in the US. In the early ’00s, she expanded her repertoire from her drum & bass roots to a hybrid of tech-house, electro, and techno, shirking genre to incorporate countless party-jams-waiting-to-be-played. In the years that followed, she’s begun to play an even greater variety of music, from spacey disco to the grimey end of dubstep — whatever suits the mood best!

Qzen spent many years investing in drum & bass culture with the female-run production collective Groundscore and their internationally recognized weekly, Eklektic. From 1997 to 2003, the ladies of Groundscore pushed the music far and wide: in addition to producing one of the longest-running drum & bass weeklies in San Francisco’s history, they orchestrated various one-off events — including a handful in Miami during the Winter Music Conference — featuring top headliners such as Kemistry & Storm, Andy C, and Grooverider, as well as favorites Fierce, Marcus Intalex, and Klute. The ladies put their heart into their work, and the vibe achieved is still talked about lovingly by those lucky enough to have experienced it.

2004 saw success with another project: The Invisibles, a live “electro-punk” band comprised of Alex Posell (a.k.a. producer/DJ Abstract) on drums/production, vocalist/keyboardist Kimi Recor, and Qzen on synth/backing vocals. After the release of the “BlahBlahBlah EP” on DJ Hell’s International Deejay Gigolo label, the group continued to receive great response to their live shows before geographic circumstances created their current hiatus. Also in 2004, Qzen’s vocal collaboration with techno producer John Tejada, entitled “Sweat (On the Walls)“, was released on Poker Flat; the record ranked number one for two months straight in Germany’s Groove Magazine and continues to get played worldwide.

2005 saw the release of three more singles with Tejada: “Paranoia” & “Sucre“, available on his label Palette Recordings, and a remix / remake of Christopher Just’s “Disco Dancer” on the aforementioned International DJ Gigolo.
Qzen launched a new party, Moxie, with partner Bryan James and in conjunction, the radio show Moxie Musik on WAR 93.7FM. She traveled to Europe to perform with Tejada and had the opportunity to rock the San Francisco Love Parade on two floats, playing both drum & bass and tech-house.

In 2006, she appeared on Dirtybird Records as the voice on “Lullabye” by Claude VonStroke, available on his Beware of the Bird album. Since then, Qzen has changed her focus in a few ways, deciding to scale back on promoting parties after many years of event production, focus her DJing more on the techno & house end of dance music (although she’s still quite a multifaceted selecta), and say goodbye to Moxie Musik after three years of weekly co-hosting. 2008 has seen the release of her first production work, as one of the 40 Thieves, for new disco label Permanent Vacation.

From 2005-2009, Qzen was the voice of the dance and electronic music sections of the iTunes Store, working as their sole dance/electronic music editor. In that position, she also curated events for Apple around the US. She left in April 2009 to focus on artistry full-time and is currently working on an album with the 40 Thieves as well as rustling up songs with other collaborators.
For now, the best way to catch her is live behind the decks. With her passion for deep, technical, versatile music and a natural talent for moving the audience, Qzen’s DJ sets are not to be missed.

“Put a bangin donk on it!“

This is what the boys have to say about themselves:

Donk Boys are Martin and Thomas - two mentally okay guys from Malmö, Sweden - who sometimes make not so mentally okay music. In the summer of 2006, the boys, both with a bunch of solo EPs previously released, joined forces in their shared flat to produce their special donk trax. Bored by (some of) the generic techno sounds of now, they try to distinguish themselves by incorporating humour, freaky sounds and twisted arrangements to their tracks.

Their debut wax was released summer 2007 on Frankie Records and more releases has since followed on labels like Trapez, Dirtybird, Siteholder, Floppy Funk, Schatten and Plak.

- FUSION SPECIAL -

We had so much fun on this old Russian airbase in Lärz, 2 hours North of Berlin, at the annual Fusion Festival. About 50.000 people came partying & relaxing during 3-4 days of nonstop “holiday communism”. The sympathetically uncommercial and ‘low-profile’ Fusion Festival happened on various stages, hosting numerous artists who performed on instruments, microphones, computers and turntables. You could also stumble over funky - funny - weirdo theater performances, Aktionskunst of all sorts, and of course the odd Michael Jackson rememberance flashmob (when 500 people did the moonwalk behind the Turmbühne main stage). We played on Saturday 27. June and managed to record our DJ set. You can download it below.

“Straight from the Golden West”

A native of the golden West, Eric Galaviz aka Hipp-E has pushed the envelope of dance music from the tender age of 16. After years of parties and inspiration from other DJ’s and Producers, Hipp-E decided it was time to try his hand at making music that better suit the left-coast of the United States.

Teaming up with partner Halo, the two produced a hybrid sound that paired the jackin’ beats of Chicago with the smoked out sounds of the Pacific. Known as the H-Foundation and 6400 Crew, they produced tracks for Siesta Music in their new home of San Diego, for their new friends at Soma in Glasgow, for the label giant Hooj Choons, and even for the East coast legends at Yoshitoshi. As a result, they drew the attention of house music lovers worldwide to the self-contained music industry of the West coast.

The next phase of Hipp-E’s skyrocketing career saw him able to take his sound abroad in the form of his legendary DJ sets. Playing slots at Fabric (London), Turbo (Toronto), Zouks (Singapore), Soma (Glasgow), Twilo (New York), More (Amsterdam), Pacha (Buenos Aires), and Allenby (Tel-Aviv) turned the heads of the clubbers who thought they had seen and heard it all.
His sets at raves in New Zealand, Montreal, Turkey, Croatia, Spain, Brazil and all over the United States have reintroduced the concept that prime-time doesn’t mean prime-speeds and has the ravers listening for a change.

Even though one might wonder when he finds the time, Hipp-E has continued to push himself in the studio, developing a sound that belongs solely to him. His solo production for labels like NRK, Soma, Product Deluxe, and Tango Recordings has garnered instant reaction from international DJs. In addition to building his studio knowledge, Hipp-E is venturing into more unknown territory. As A&R for San Francisco based Tango, he is able to take his knack for finding amazing records to play out and apply it to finding upcoming producers from around the world who will help to shape the future of dance music.

After the huge success of H-Foundation’s “Environments” album, a concept that he and Halo worked on together with live musicians and represents the fusion of styles that has become their trademark, the boys now feel it is time to move on with their careers. They have amicably agreed to go their separate ways, with Hipp-e representing the H-Foundation moniker, and each of them DJing as solo artists.

With a DJ schedule that shows no signs of slowing down and a resume that puts him at the top of his field, Hipp-E will continue to realise his dreams and inspire the rest of the industry.

It’s been a great last two years for Mike Monday. Long tipped as one of Europe’s most upand-coming producers, in 2005 Monday’s profile exploded with a run of killer productions - experimental, jackin’, and flat-out weird but with both feet on the dancefloor and a real oldschool spirit.

And now? Sasha to Steve Bug, Mylo to MANDY, David Duriez to Freestyle Man, Josh Wink to Pete Tong - from the big names to the deepest underground, everyone’s playing Mike Monday’s records…

The press loves his music as well:

He’s “one of the 100 reasons dance music still rules” - IDJ.
He’s “one of the main players of 2006” - DJ mag.
He’s “the remixers’ remixer” - Mixmag.

And there’s more praise as well for Playtime, the label on which he’s the star act - it’s “the label of the moment” (One Week to Live) and “one of the best labels to come out of 2005” (IDJ).

That’s why 2006 has seen a continuation of Monday’s heady rise. Gigs wordwide from Russia to Australia to the US to everywhere in Europe - and such a high profile in Paris that he plays there more often than most local DJs. Rave reviews for tracks and remixes on European labels like Simple, Freerange, Dirt Crew and Hi-Phen - and of course more tracks on Playtime in preparation for release of his debut artist album, “Smorgasbord” (out September 2006).

The album is a statement about where Monday is at today - one foot in house, one foot in electronica, and a finger in every pie as well. “I wanted,” Monday says, “to make an album - something you could listen to from beginning to end. Too many producers just throw together a collection of their old dance tracks”. So “Smorgasbord” takes in a huge spectrum of electronic music - from Big Chill-style sunset electronica to the funk fuelled rhythm, booty shakin’ basslines and self-effacing sense of humour in the productions for which he first became known.

In Monday’s view, there’s no confusion at all between these disparate genres. He refuses to be boxed into one specific style of dance music. He’s always held that approach, dating his ‘Mondayisms’ from early influences. “I was never a rock or indie kid at school”, he says.

“While my mates were shoe gazing with Morrissey and The Cure, I was shaking my butt to anything from Pfunk to Prince. When I first moved to London in the early 90s, I played saxophone in various funk and jazz bands, including Beat Foundation with Andy Cato from Groove Armada”, he says. “London was a real melting pot then, a really vibrant and exciting time for electronic music. I got hooked on house pretty quickly because it had such a real sense of possibility. Nearly every month a new sound would appear. And there weren’t any strict stylistic boundaries - just great records.”

Now that approach continues at his residency at Playtime, the London club from which the label has sprung. “Playtime is a throwback to the best days of acid house”, Monday says. “It’s the last really mixed night left in London - gay, straight, men, women, geeks, fashionistas - whatever! That’s important to us because it’s the kind of testbed you need for new music: a club where people really care what they hear - but where they want to hear something new. That’s what house music should be. It’s got to be fresh, new, so exciting you can’t help dance to it…”

“Jawoll, Jaaaa! Rums rums rums”

Die Musiksozialisation des Berliner DJs Jan Kühn aka Fresh Meat begann Anfang der 90er mit Eurodance à la Snap, Maxx und Culture Beat durch Radio und Fernsehen, Thunderdome im Schulbus über holprige Brandenburger Landstraßen und Sonic Empire auf der Love Parade in Berlin. Zusätzlich amüsierte er Damen seines Alters abends mit seiner Musiksammlung bei mehreren Gläsern Wein.

Aus einem Hobby wurde eine Leidenschaft, aus Leidenschaft eine Profession, aus Profession eine Mission: Im Oktober 2006 gründete er das Projekt „Berlin Mitte Institut für Bessere Elektronische Musik“ und produziert seitdem zusammen mit seinen Freunden Kandel und Robosonic Radio- und WebTV Shows rund um alle Themen, die für die elektronische Musikkultur von Bedeutung sind.

In diesem Rahmen entstehen international bekannte Sendungen, an denen unter anderen der Berliner Club Berghain, verschiedene Labels wie Minus, Mobilee, Get Physical, Pokerflat, Trenton, Kassette oder Great Stuff, Bookingagenturen wie Clique, Vertriebe wie Word and Sound oder bekannte Berliner Partyveranstalter wie Delikat oder Klangsucht mitwirken. Aus diesen Ressourcen schöpft Fresh Meat, um die Szene zu vernetzen und fruchtbare Kooperationen zwischen DJs, Veranstaltern, Produzenten, Labelbetreibern und Medien zu fördern.

Dadurch ist Fresh Meat regelmäßig hinter Plattenspielern in Berliner Clubs anzutreffen. Angefangen hat er mit Drum & Bass, danach gab es einen kurzen Ausflug in die Nuskoolbreaks. Derzeit hat er sich gänzlich dem House, Techno, Chillout und den Broken Beats verschrieben.

Fresh Meat liest keine Charts und kauft keine Hits. Die meisten der Tracks aus seinen Sets und Sendungen entstammen dem großen Promopool des Berlin Mitte Instituts. Dies ermöglicht ihm Griffe aus einem großen Repertoire vielfältiger Musik, die nicht anhand kurzer Vorhörentscheinungen in Geschäften oder geldlicher Engpässe selektiert sind. Für Fresh Meat ist Tanzbarkeit, Eigenheit und Überraschung die Essenz eines guten Sets für den Dancefloor. Neben ausgelassener Feierei, steht auch der der musikalische Genuss im Vordergrund.

- „Mach et einfach!“ –

Mit dieser Maxime reist der 1980 mit in Berlin bürgerlichem Namen Matthias Kandel geborene Produzent und DJ Kandel durch die Musiklandschaft und öffnet Genreschubladen, um zu sehen, was darin steckt.

Seine Produktionen und Sets sind daher keineswegs festgelegt, sondern bewegen sich zwischen verschiedenen musikalischen Extremen, die miteinander kombiniert werden möchten. Wichtig ist Kandel jedoch das Charakteristische, das besondere Element, das ein Musikstück aus der breiten Masse hervorhebt.
In der Berliner Musikszene ist Kandel zurzeit mit mehreren Projekten aktiv: als Teil des Berlin Mitte Institut stellt er mit Fresh Meat die neuesten Releases und Charaktere der Musikszene vor, organisiert Veranstaltungen, bereichert den digitalen Lifestyle mit der Community keepitrollin.de und versucht natürlich mit eigenen Produktionen seine musikalischen Einflüsse zu verarbeiten.

Veröffentlicht und auf sich aufmerksam gemacht hat Kandel mit EPs auf Producer Network, Diskomafia und zuletzt mit großem Erfolg auf dem digitalen Techno-Label Autist Records. Man munkelt, es gäbe bald ein Release auf Florian Meindl’s Label Flash. Zur Zeit schraubt Kandel ausserdem an verschiedenen Remixen, die in den nächsten Monaten erscheinen werden.

“Rumplestiltskin“

Originally hailing from New Zealand but raised in Australia, Emerson Todd has enjoyed tremendous success on both sides of the Tasman. He first got the bug to collect music very early in life as his mother owned several independent record stores. This gave him access to pretty much anything and everything he ever wanted to hear.

As fate would have it, Emerson returned to New Zealand in 1996 to visit family and friends. This visit ended up lasting for seven years and, before long, he had established himself as one of the country’s top DJs, balancing national tours with monthly gigs back in Australia.

In 1998 he met Christiaan Ercolano and formed the act House of Downtown, which quickly gathered an impressive following with the success of their weekly radio show and their debut single ‘Up For the One’, which was supported by the likes of Derrick May.

The pair were soon snapped up by Universal Music who offered them their own label to run and release on. Subsequently, they produced two full-length albums. During this time, they also produced the complete movie score for UK Company Film Four (of ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’) for the movie ‘Stickmen’.

In 2003, Emerson relocated to Australia to concentrate on production and audio engineering, producing for other artists and leaving his own music aside for a couple of years. Absorbing all the experience he could to perfectionate his skills as an engineer and producer, he soon found himself at the forefront of audio engineering in Australia, working with such bands as The Presets, The Sleepy Jackson, Teenager and Pnau.

Having now worked for both major and independent labels locally and internationally, under aliases, in groups, and produceing and engineering for many world-class acts, Emerson has finally stepped out from behind the desk and now dedicated himself to refining his own sound.

From his early productions on Darren Emerson’s imprint Underwater, to signing on Claude VonStroke’s label Dirtybird, and now with a string of high profile releases to follow (such as a collaboration with Tim Green for Cocoon Recordings, and a remix of a Layo & Bushwacka track to be released soon) – it is clear Emerson Todd is on the right path to making his quirky and fun electronic dance music heard worldwide!

As he is moving to London in June, you can expect to hear him play all over Europe in summer. Be sure not to miss his DJ-set @ Tresor Club in Berlin on July 1st.

“Robotic Redemption…”

Android Cartel is a production team and DJ duo comprised of Reagan Denius and Chris Mohn based in Los Angeles, California. Their style combines the sounds of tech house, deep house, techno, minimal and other styles of 4×4 electronic dance music to create an abstract inventive sound that takes its listeners to other galaxies. As Chris and Reagan put it themselves, when they produce music and play out, they’d like you to sit in on their android invasions across the universe, spreading the positive messages of life.

In short time since their inception in October 2007, their music is being played and supported by the likes of Steve Lawler, Ben Watt, Radio Slave, Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox, Luciano, John Digweed, Chris Fortier, Hernan Cattaneo and many more.

At the end of 2008, an E.P. by Android Cartel was signed to Steve Lawler’s label VIVa MUSIC - their first big release “Cyber Psychosis” was released in early 2009. As well as the VIVa release, the Androids had two releases on Chris Fortier’s label Fade Records, and will be seeing a remix of one of Fortier’s songs on Australian label EQ Recordings, which named them as part of their “who’s who” list of underground electronic dance music producers. Both Fade Records releases have charted in the top 10 of the Balance Record Pool for underground electronic dance music.

In the last year the Androids have also built up a tight following in the Los Angeles area and have DJed at many shows in the local scene, quickly becoming local matadors in Southern California. In Los Angeles, they headlined the popular Monday Social twice last year, opened up for John Tejada at the beginning of 2009, and so far played many shows at the King King venue. The Androids have also created a buzz in the San Diego scene, playing at Giant’s SPIN night club, as well as throwing many of their own parties in conjunction with Tekfunk.

Android Cartel also host a monthly internet radio show called “Expressions in Sound” on Proton Radio, airing every third Wednesday of the month from 3PM - 5PM PST (6PM - 8PM EST). The show has hosted guests such as Luca Bacchetti, Robert Babicz, Livio & Roby, Chris Fortier, Erphun, an many others.

“Church Of Nonsense“

Daniele Papini has a passion for music and this is evident when you first meet him. This man lives and breathes music so much that his home is just one big studio, where he tweaks his machines (”I just need a studio with a bed in the corner!”).
He started Djing during his early 20ʼs and quickly became resident in several clubs in Florence in the late 90ʼs. Soon after that, he started playing as a guest DJ slots in many clubs around Europe.

Daniele’s passion for DJing and music soon turned into a want to produce and after a chance meeting with Alen Sforzina in Croatia founded the GraFit Project . Their first collaborations were released on Italian labels like Urban Mantra and German labels such as Stadtwald and Toneman. In 2004 Daniele worked hard in the Urban Mantra studio - during this period, flying through the “backyards of techno music”, Daniele met the Italian DJ & producer Riccardo Ferri, who in turn introduced him to the Alchemy Records family.

In 2006 Mauro Picotto asked Daniele to join the Meganite crew as a DJ. Daniele agreed and his DJ career once again took off - he was performing all over the world again, touring with Meganite, which over the last 5 years has become a well respected brand, not only at its home in Ibiza but worldwide.

For some time, Daniele travelled back and forth between Berlin and Florence, eventually moving to Berlin and fitting out his studio. Finally, Daniele’s hard work in the studio paid off when he released one of the biggest hits of 2008, “Church of Nonsense”. Released in May 2008, just before the summer, the popularity of this monster of a track grew and grew, and it rapidly became an all-time techno anthem. “Church of Nonsense” received great feedback - not only from almost every top DJ but also from people following entirely different musical “genres” - and remained at the peak of the Beatport techno charts and the DJ Mag downloads charts.

Currently, Daniele Papini is working on several solo projects and remixes, collaborating with other artists from electronic music to indie music and working on a Live set. If you are in Berlin, check out his MySpace for dates and come to see him play at the Club der Visionäre, where he regularly brings you extensive DJ sets lasting up to 8 hours. The Daniele Papini DJset @ this month’s BKI-12 was recorded there in mid March.

Friday 24 april:

6:00: Sacha Robotti [½ of Robosonic] gets up, brushes teeth, gets dressed, packs stuff, rushes down to the cab where Cord Henning Labuhn [½ of Robosonic] is already sitting with tired eyes and a smile.

6:30: Friendly turkish cab driver stops at the bakery so the Berlin Kreuzberg Institut can get some Croissants & Börek (which will stay in the bag til Sunday, half-eaten)

7:45: Berlin Kreuzberg Institut meets Berlin Mitte Institut (Matthias Kandel aka Kandel & Jan Kühn aka Fresh Meat) at Schönefeld airport. Excitement in the air. Ryanair staff is surprisingly friendly. On check-in, Kandel & Fresh Meat have to switch on their laptops to prove they didn’t turn their machines into bombs.

8:45: “Goode morninge laydiese anda gentellemen thissise youre captaine speakinge”. Lovely airplane speakers. No turbulences. The alps look beautiful!

10:15: Touchdown in Milano / Bergamo, out of there pretty fast as we only have handluggage. Meeting our driver Conni, supernice guy, 40minute ride into the city.

11:00: Drop off at Fausto’s (organizer of Privat Party with Oliver) in Milan centre. Fausto’s place is small and cosy and you have to access through a midget door into a courtyard: BMI & BKI’s home for 2 days.

11:30: Meeting Fausto & Oliver accross the street in a café. Cappuccino.

12:15: Lasagna, Pasta with Salmon, Chinotto, Cappuccino at the place where Conni’s girlfriend works. Mmmmh..

13:00: Pier from Milan-based DJ duo Radio Marelli takes BMI & BKI to the Radio Popolare studios on the outskirts of Milan. Radio Popolare is a left-wing FM station broadcasting in the whole of Italy. We got 15 minutes on air and are very late.

13:30: BMI & BKI get interviewed by a fast-speaking sympathetic Italian. The radio hosts wants us to talk about the BMI & BKI concepts, the “East and the West thing”, about partying in Berlin and why we love what we do. The language barrier makes Robotti talk most of the time in his (semi-)fluid Italian. The Radio Popolare hosts play a 90s-sounding breakbeat song and falsely announce it as a “BMI track” - bloindin!

14:00: Cappuccino. Ride back to town centre.

15:00: Facing the first technical problems, as the guy who was supposed to get the internet running at the “Spazio Maderna” party location [so we could stream the whole evening live on web tv Shouted FM] never showed up. Fausto found a USB mobile phone card internet connection, which at least permitted us to stream Live Audio via a Nokia. We all hoped that it would work when 1500 Italians are dancing at the location and sending SMS.

16:00: Cord & Kandel chillout at Fausto’s place, while Robotti & Fresh Meat drive off to the location to soundcheck.

17:00: “Spazio Maderna” party location is a big industrial hall in an industrial area with a massive soundsystem. Barely any party lighting, no visuals, just plain concrete, metal and later on the crowd. Rave 1.0. Sound is super loud and bassy. Fresh Meat hooks up his mike and gets the Nokia stream running, it all seems to work. Back to Fausto’s. Italians drive well, but fast! In his next life, Conni will be a rally driver.

18:00: Supermarket to get everything a DJ needs to survive a night of hard work. Siesta time for BMI & BKI at Fausto’s. Some of us try to sleep while others show off their Traktor system, firing up the obvious “Vinyl vs. CD vs. Digital-DJ” talk.

20:00: Shower, get dressed, pack stuff, smoke a cigarette. Cappuccino. Waiting for Conni - who we’re supposed to meet at 21:15 for dinner but who is instead spending quality time at the police station to claim his car papers were stolen.

21:30: Cab to “Don Gio”, nr.1 pasta place in Milan. Salty bruschettas with anchovies, red wine, pasta with chicken, sausage, tomato sauce. Of course: strong Espressos as desert. Home sweet home!

23:30: “Spazio Maderna”. Radio Marelli warms up, place fills up. Free entry - just the drinks cost a little more. Fresh Meat starts interviewing people and feels in his element like a fish in the water.

00:30: Kandel & Fresh Meat tag, place is packed by now, people have their first drink.

01:00: Robosonic take over, place is rather packed by now, slowly turning up the volume.

01:30: Crowd starts to bounce, suddenly Fausto runs up telling us the police is at the door threatening to close the place as too many people are inside (1500) and too many people are standing outside trying to get in (2500).

01:45: Slowly turning down the volume. 1500 Italians sing football-type songs and “turn the volume up” and are coming up to the DJ booth to ask what the hell’s wrong. Repeated “scusa ma la polizia ci ha detto di spegnere la musica” about 100 times.

02:00: Lights on, music out. Damn! Everybody leaves the place, the bouncers look solid. Packing our stuff, smoking a cigarette, saying “sorry sorry” to the remaining crowd. Fausto & Oliver say “sorry sorry” to us (blaming it on the owner of the location who apparently didn’t talk to the polizia before the party). They invite us to do this party again in a safe location in the upcoming months. Stay tuned!

03:30: Amnesia club. Jeff Mills is playing extremely hard techno!

“House music all night long…”

Luke Solomon has had a successful career spanning almost 17 years. He has worked his way up through the ranks gaining recognition from all different fields of electronica and dance. Starting in the early 90’s he went from record shop attended to securing a job at Freetown Records working with artists such as Felix the Housecat, Masters at Work, Jamie Principle and Marshall Jefferson. He then went on to work with Roger Sanchez at Narcotic in the mid 90’s.

This led to his long lasting friendship and partnership with Derrick Carter and the setting up of their legendary label, Classic. Through all of this Luke has retained a successful production career with partner Justin Harris, as Freaks, and as a recently established solo artist, recording for Radioslave’s Rekids Label amongst others.

Back in 1994 Luke began working in various studios alongside dance music veterans Rob Mello and Ty Holden.  Learning from the ground up he initially sat in on sessions and threw ideas around whilst his peers did all the hard work. Over the first few years Luke worked in different studios on different systems using a whole range of outboard and analogue equipment. During this time he remixed Ashley Beedle’s Black Sunshine Orchestra and recorded for the seminal deep house label Prescription Underground.

15 years later and Luke has around 150 original productions under his built which include four Freaks albums and two solo albums plus around 200 remixes of music ranging from Mood to Swing, Matthew Herbert to  Kasabian, the Archie Bronson Outfit and a little Duran Duran thrown in along the way.

This brings us to present day.  Luke has been working on his third solo album and a whole stack of new Freaks material after riding on the wave of a top 10 hit with “The Creeps” (International DJ Gigolo). In turn this has opened new doors for Luke, having just finished co - producing Damian Lazarus’s solo album with Penguin Cafe Orchestra’s Arthur Jeffes, cementing Luke’s ambition to become a full time producer.

Luke has continued to work on various platforms using his years of experience as A & R coupled with his technical studio knowledge to allow him to put his stamp on other peoples music. We at BKI are honoured to have Luke spin some tunes for us!

There’s a rumble in the underground - coming out, swinging like a charging bear to bring the noise. It’s the sound of sleep deprivation, three days on the rack, the buzzing in your ear and the twisted, wonky triple vision as you fight your way to the bar once again.

Born of a love all things weird, wired and wonderful, Idiotproof is the three headed, freakshow baby, born of many long nights of chemical abandonment. A lover of heavy beats, twisting basslines and mutilated soft toys, this freak of nature will jack you on the dancefloor as well as, possibly, bite your leg off.

Idiotproof is the combined force of three notorious international playboys - one of them being Sir Jamie Anderson, that’s for sure. Idiotproof have reached into the deepest heart of rave and have emerged from the black strobe light with a chrome plated, low slung, bass driven conception of house music for the twenty-first century. Genre defining singles for Jesse Rose’s Made to Play label have delivered shockwaves throughout the globe and remixes for Armand Van Helden, X-Press 2, Rolloʼs (Faithless) new All Thieves project, Sam Sparro and the Audio Bullys have resulted in dance floor annihilation for guns big and small.
